"My Girl" Princess Cut diamonds

A friend told me recently about their co-worker receiving an engagement ring set with these diamonds. Me being oh-so-curious about diamonds though, I went and looked up the cut online. Here is the website of the proprietor - Shimansky - but I can''t find the cut on there so here are links explaining it and stating their proprietorship of it - GemTradeNet Forum Link and NewsDiamonds.Net News Article.

I wondered does anyone know anything about this cut? My friend said her co-worker was told the cut has extra facets to make it more sparkly and is exclusive to this shop in South Africa. I wondered about the truth of some of the statements that this company is making-

1 - They apparently told this woman that a diamond with extra facets is automatically more sparkly

2 - Their website states that a Princess cut diamond has more brilliance and fire than an RB

3 - Their website claims that crisscut diamonds are exclusive to them (but haven''t some PScopers bought this cut in the States?)

My friend said her co-worker''s ring is absolutely beautiful and the co-worker is delighted, which of course is the most important thing. I''m just curious to learn more!

I don''t know anything about this particular cut. That said, in my opinion you''re right to be skeptical of a lot of that information. More facets does not automatically equal "more sparkly." In fact, in my experience, an ideal-cut 57-facet RB stone has more noticeable scintillation than a 100-facet RB. As far as brilliance, it depends not so much on how many facets, but on how they are arranged and how symmetrical they are - facets that line up to bounce light around will make a stone return light better. Also, brighter does not necessarily indicate "more visually pleasing," you''re attempting to balance brilliance, scintillation, and fire to get the most attractive stone. Does a princess cut have better brilliance and fire than a RB? Not in my experience. Plus, while there has been more than a century of research into what makes a RB attractive and how to cut the stone for maximum light performance, princess cuts have received less study and there are fewer consistent standards to measure and predict light performance. At any rate, I agree that a lot of what your co-worker reports seems to be false, but it''s nice if she is happy with her diamond.
