My "jewelry collection" is sad although I'm working on changing that. Here is my very first garnet. I think I was 10 when I got it for my birthday. I am much older now. Can't believe I still have it. But then again there is not much in my jewelry box.
My very first gemstone was a marquise shaped aqua for my 8th grade graduation. I chipped the dingers out of it, and so it's no longer wearable. The ring had two small melee in it, probably 10 points each, which I reused in another ring.
It must have a lot of sentimental value for you. My mother has a huge garnet ring from her late grand aunt, (dated from mid-1930s Shanghai!).. the stone is nothing special and it's in a slightly gaudy setting but it is one of my mom's most cherished possessions (and this is a lady who has some seriously blingy diamonds and jade pieces) How wonderful you still have your garnet ring!
I have not learned the fine art of photographing gemstones. Will have to practice when no one is home. My family thinks I'm strange enough when I take pictures of the dogs. If they see me taking pictures of jewelry they might lock me up. Will have to take a picture of a not so attractive ring that was from a family member. I look at it and go ???
I think it's impressive that your ring is still intact. Perhaps you're one of the few who are careful enough to wear some of the softer stones in rings.
Garnets are fairly durable, more so than other gems of the same hardness, so that helps. I know a beryl or a tourmaline would probably suffer more chips.
