Hi all,

So we purchased our engagement ring 2 months ago and only just noticed a small brown dot in the centre of the diamond

The rings details old brilliant diamond, cut vvs1, color f ,diamond just under 1 carat the valuation we received off the jeweler has no mentioned of the flaws
Is it worth me calling the jeweler I don’t want to offend them

With a VVS2 you should not see any flaws with the naked eye, are you talking about that dot in the very center? If so this is something more common with older cut diamonds which would be the cutlet you are seeing or it could be the setting causing an issue...my money is on the cutlet. Did y’all pick out this stone with the jeweler? Is it certified? Have you had it independently appraised to verify it is the stone you purchased?

This diamond looks to be a nice oec/transitional cut to me! It is a beautiful engagement ring and we are pretty crazy about old cuts, so you will find a large fan base here ;-) However, if you were after a modern round brilliant, the jeweler should have clarified to you that is not what you were purchasing. Do you have GIA/other report to share with us?

It's the culet - in old cuts, the pointy tip of the diamond is cut off so you can see your finger underneath or the setting metal.
It's a lovely stone - really pretty facets and the setting is beautiful!

yes culet, not cutlet! Don't feel bad. After I got my first diamond I thought it had a crack in it, because I saw a line running across it when I looked at it from the side. But is actually a girdle reflection I believe.

RE:

In the old days, only one diamond was cut from each crystal as the diamond saw had not yet been invented. However, even then, cutters liked to maintain as much weight as possible in the finished diamond, and if they cut the diamond with a medium to large culet, they could cut with a steeper pavilion angle and get a heavier diamond for the same diameter size.

As the cuts got better, there was a belief by many that a small culet protected the diamond more from chipping. As a student at GIA I accepted this as gospel when I was told this as a fact in my diamond grading class.

However, a culet also allowed a cutter to disguise the fact that the diamond was not going to point up well. When the EightStar diamonds were created in Japan and shortly after the Hearts and Arrows diamonds became an important part of diamond sales in Japan in the 1980's, the market in Japan started to demand pointed culets. This quickly became a world wide demand and the small culets that were the norm are now no longer found on well cut round brilliant cut diamonds.

I thought you might enjoy some of the history behind the culet that you have now discovered in your diamond.

Oh what a cute culet! I love old cuts.. and your ring is beautiful.

OP, I think your ring is beautiful and looks so elegant on your finger! And, yes, the small dot you see in the center is what is called an open culet (a closed culet would come to a point). Only if the culet (open or closed) was off-center or the like would it be considered a flaw.

Please enjoy your lovely ring!
