OMG
I am so upset. I live in Australia and purchase diamonds fairly regularly, always shipped via express post (usps) and fully insured. I had finally purchased myself a 2.1ct cushion from a friend of mine, he posted in the usual manner and it was sitting in customs for 3 days before it cleared, then again in the post depo over the christmas/new year break and finally got delivered this morning, well the package did and the paperwork but no diamond!

UNBELIEVABLE! Panic started to set in, and i checked the packaging, there was a slit on the end of the mailing envelope and the custom envelope inside which contained the diamond had been ripped. I just cant believe it, im in a state of shock and grief really.

Filed a complaint and my friend has started the insurance claim which was fully insured but i feel i have been violated in some way. I assume I wont be out of pocket for anything but I am left feel utterly disappointed that someone could do this!! How can this happen??!!

When I called Australia Post they said no dont post valuables via express you need to post it via registered post. Its slower but more secure apparently. Can anyone tell me why its more secure? Doesnt it still have to go through the usual channels that express does? i just dont uderstand the difference in the security of the item posted a different way...

siiiigh.... so upset i just needed to vent somewhere!

I don''t know anything about the Australian post, but wanted to say I am so sorry! That must be a horrible feeling. I''m glad you had it insured and hope it all works out for you!

When something is sent registered, it is supposed to be signed for by each person who touches the envelope. It also gets transported in locked bags. HOWEVER the USPS recently changed their rules, and we no longer have to sign for and monitor registers that originate outside of the United States.

I don't mean to freak you out but I thought you HAD to go registered mail for it to be insured for more than $5,000?

I'm really sorry-unfortunately it happens a LOT around the holidays because of additional holiday help they hire. Many jewelers are not allowed to ship over a holiday weekend for that reason or else their insurer won't cover them.

And as Reader said registered is much safer. It's signed for by every single person that touches it and is held under lock and key. So if something does get lost there are only a few people who had access and thus the case is easier to crack.

I am so sorry to hear about your diamond!!!

I am so sorry about your stolen diamond! That''s just absolutely horrible! I hope things work out for you though and the insurance claim doesn''t take too long!

What a rotten start to the new year! I hope everything is settled soon!!

I lost a Rolex watch to that type of theft through UPS. I know how shocking and disbelieving you feel. In time, the claim will be processed and you will have to choose another stone. I''m very sorry for your anguish. Let''s just hope the claims process goes quickly!

That sucks. so sorry.

HUGS!!!

I''m sorry this happened.
What really makes me mad about theft like this is thinking about the smug #@$%!&* who has scored him/herself a "free" diamond

. Having been stolen from myself I can relate to the feelings of violation. I hope you find another stone even more beautiful than the one you''ve lost.

I am so sorry to hear about your diamond being stolen. I hope you get the money and get it replaced soon.

In my case, Jim Schultz did a very good job with his insurance and FedEx finally reimbursed.

It should be an old story for me.
I say it should, but I won''t never use FedEx again, next time I''ll go to the seller.
I was back from the hospital, this was a very traumatic experience.
I give you a big hug.

Thankyou all so much for your kind words, I really needed to hear them!

I just cant believe that this has happened, and I really hope that whoever did this gets CAUGHT!

Aweful! I''m so sorry.

Ditto Neatfreak re: the security of registered mail.

And I know it was a friend you purchased from and likely that complicates things, but technically *he* is the one who needs to file the claim and worry about reimbursement, not you. If I bought something from a vendor it would be their responsibility to ensure it reached me and insure it against loss/theft. Same if I send something to them.

He should refund the money to you and then go from there.

Yes, my friend is sorting out the insurance part, I think even if I wanted to file for it, it has to be lodged by the sender not reciever. I still needed to take the packaging down to the post office for it to be inspected and a complaint lodged for missing contents.

The package was just under the $5000 mark - I wish it had of been over so then it definitely would have been sent registered mail and this may never have happened... Guess thats a lesson learnt for next time.

Maybe there is a nicer diamond waiting for me in the wings.... Fingers crossed!

Sad news but, You did everything right.
Always insure for full value.

We were in Vegas on a Monday looking for a certain E-ring and wedding band.
The shop didn''t have the E-ring so we decided to pick up the wedding band and have it shipped Fed EX Signature Required to my work to arrive the Friday after we got back home.

We got back home Late Thursday night and YUP it was sitting right in front of the door.

No signature and it was delivered on Tuesday.

I called the company and someone sent it out the wrong way and too early

Good thing I''m honest,
could have had a matching pair.

What I am wondering is why I didnt have to pay import taxes on it when it arrived into Australia - its delcared value was for the full amount it was insured for and here anything over $1000 is subject to import taxes. I should have had to pay a few extra hundred dollars before it even cleared customs...

when I sent my diamond to an appraiser I put it in a baggie and put the baggie in a ring (box and put the box in another box (about 10x10x10) all packed around with tissue paper, sealed the box on every edge and the wrapped the whole thing in brown paper bag. I don''t know that I would ship in just an envelope - yikes! I''m sorry to you for this, hope it all works out in the end!
