I''m having horrible problems with my 1 carat, platium, princess cut, four-prong diamond ring. I''ve only had it for two months and the center stone is loose AGAIN. I''ve already taken it back once to have the stone fixed and now less than a month later I have to take it back again. Should you hear the ring rattle around? Why would my stone become loose after this short of time? I''m beginning to think it''s an omen.

The prongs must be improperly notched. You probably need a new head put in the ring with the prongs properly notched, and the diamond properly set.

Hi Yomama
I think Richard is probably right about the notching,
Just a thought, was the ring resized smaller after the diamond was set?

Thanks for your help. Actually my ring hasn't been resized. I had it for about a month before the stone became loose in the setting. Four weeks later, same problem.

Do you have any nervous habits/behaviours which might loosen it? (work with a jack hammer maybe?)

No nervous habits, no strenous work with tools. In fact after the last time I had it "tightened" I was extremely careful with my hand to make sure I wasn't the cause of the loose diamond. It seems to be a design flaw. Do I have a right to ask my diamond be reset and not "glued" to give it a proper fit?

The only reason I can think of for it to become loose so soon is because, as Richard says, it was improperly set to start with. Yes, you have a right to ask them do it over. If it's a reputable store, they should agree if you stand your ground on it.

Good news! They are going to replace the head on my ring. Thanks for all your help. I really sounded knowledgable when I went into the store.

That's nice! It's also nice to sound knowledgable when walking in those doors. I think the internet has made lots of us like that, who otherwise would be easily taken advantage of.
Good luck!!
