Hello,

I am new here and I need some information. My wedding band, the bigger diamonds glows bluish white when my ring is exposed to black lights. I think my diamonds are fake. Please some one educate my if this is normal. My husband spent a lot of money and if there is something wrong then I would like to get a replacement. Help!

Hi Brigette:

First the phenomenon your referring to occurs when a diamond has Fluorescence. Around 50% of diamonds on the market have Fluorescence which ranges from faint, medium, strong and very strong. The only time that Fluorescence is a real problem is when it affects the appearance of the stone by making it "milky" which mostly becomes a real problem in stones which have very-stong Fluorescence.

You will and have obviously noticed this affect in a night-club under blacklights.

So it is important to remember your diamond is not fake and Fluorescence is seen and a trait in about half the diamonds on the market. I personally think Fluorescence is a neat characteristic.

My best friend just recently asked me this same question. I guess I wouldn''t know what flourescense was if I was a PS''er :)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I heard that fluorescence is actually a good thing in terms of telling a true diamond from a fake. Only true diamonds have fluorescence.

This is not true...there are real diamonds that have no fluorescence whatsoever.

FG....I think she meant CZ''s don''t have fluor..aka if you see a diamond with fluor, it''s gotta be a real one.

Sorry, I didn't clarify.

Yes, there are real diamonds that do not have any flouresence at all, but if you do have flouresence, then you most definitely have a real diamond because fakes do not. Does that make sense?

EDITED TO ADD:
Thanks Mara, that's what I meant.

Back in the day,................ They were called "Blue Whites" and were highly desireable.

The presence of fluor. is not a reliable indicator of diamond.

Many of the diamond simulant materials - GGG, YAG, syn. rutile, syn. sapphire, syn. spinel, Strontium titanate, CZ - can show fluor. Granted, with the exception of syn. spinel (can show blue fluor), most of the fluor. is colored orangish, reddish, yellowish, greenish, colors less frequently seen in diamond...but I still think it''s not a good indicator taken alone.

Just in case this is hard to believe, you can always show the ring to a random jeweler in town and ask "what is this". Since lots of diamonds are not bough by the wearer, the questions can''t sound silly.
