This is my boulder opal pendant. Notice how the play of color changes based on the viewing angle.

Boulder opal is opal occurring in ironstone matrix; the opal is cut on top with the ironstone matrix as backing that adds strength and a dark background.

It is NOT a doublet or triplet which is an assembled stone where the layers are cemented together.

Very pretty necklace. I hope to find an opal ring someday. Your necklace has many colors in it and thats what I like in particular.

cflutish:

Thank you so much for posting that beautiful opal!

I particularly like the mounting...did you have it done? Is it open in the back?

I have an opal that is set in a stock basket four-prong mounting (I''m not sure I''m describing it correctly)...and I hate it! I''d love to remount it some day. I''ve saved the picture of your beauty for future reference.

Thanks!

Widget, yes it is open in the back and is a handmade split bail mounting.

Here''s another picture, but this time we took it indoors. The ones above in the sunlight tended to wash out the colors.

How about a neck shot? That''s one of the prettiest opals I''ve ever seen.

Oh cflutist, I love your boulder opal pendant, the colors are just amazing. I have loved opals all my life, but yours is one of the prettiest I''ve ever seen.

As I found out today, opals are hard to take pictures of! I''d see a good shot showing all the fire and try to get it with the camera, but any movement at all, and you''d end up with something else.

I tried using a light with it, but that turned everything that pinkish color.....it actually was on a white piece of paper!

Oh.... I loooooooooooooove opals!! Beautiful!!!!

My mom has one that I am going to try to photograph this week just so I can drool at my own leisure.
