On a lark, I purchased some Jackson''s Crossroads amethyst rough (mined in Georgia) and sent it out for faceting. I''ve read about all the issues about purchasing rough and not being knowledgeable about determining if it''s suitable for cutting, so I really didn''t have any big expectations - I just wanted a fun project.

Here''s one pic of the rough, but if you want to see more, you can view them here.

There were a lot of fingerprints and hidden flaws, so this is the largest of the stones. It''s 8.3mm, star cut, in full sun. It goes a bit darker in direct sun, but certainly not black.

This stone is magical in indirect sunlight!

A little sun. Here you can kind of see a star pattern in the middle, too.

So awesome!! Congrats!

okay, these all look alike, don''t they!

Gorgeous, you have to share with us who cut them!! I think I know who though!

ETA: I don't think it's Vallejo either.

This little guy is a 7mm round, in a Celtic Cross cut.

Still trying to figure out how to set these.

YG.

All together. The smallest one is 5.3mm. I think it''s a round brilliant cut with some extra facets - 97 total.

last one for now.

I''m really pleased with how these turned out, and while I would have loved a whopping cushion, it just wasn''t possible with this rough.

I''d love to set the star, but I''m not sure how to do it - any ideas?

Very cool!!

I love them.

I like the way the Jackson X stones are more blue than most.

On the one stone, what is it that makes the cut called a Celtic Cross? I cannot figure that out from the photo. I have never seen the cut before.

Okay TL, if I tell you the truth, will you tell me who you thought the cutter was? It actually was BK! I think he did a smashing job!

Wow! Beautiful stones, all of them have such different characteristics. Love it!

Hi blinky!

Yes, these were cut by Bob Kast, and the star is my favorite too.

I haven''t taken any pics with incandescent or fluourescent light - maybe I''ll try tomorrow.

Wow, it was Vallejo!! He did a great job. He would sell so much more on ebay if his pictures were like yours!! I hope he reads Pricescope!!

I thought it was Lloyd Forrester of clearcutgems.com. He does a lot of those hexagon shapes. Check out his website. Never ordered from him, but I'm impressed with his cutting.

I love the celtic cross cut- gorgeous! I''m

I like the idea of doing a pendant for the star cut!

Question? Did he send them back to you in a gem box?

I''m not familiar with this cut either, so I''m going to ask him. I can tell it''s a different cut, though - definitely not a RB or portuguese. I''ve never seen a crown like this, with such a tiny table. I''ll let you know what he says.

cellentani - Those are gorgeous, gorgeous amethysts. I love the color and the cuts are amazing. I''d say this was a most successful experiment.

I chuckled at this - DH also asked how they were packaged. But nooooo, no gem box. I actually picked up some really cheap ones at Intergem, and am going to send them to him! Sigh...

ETA: just checked out clearcutgems - thanks for the heads up, he's got some very nice stones!

Great looking stones

Just WOW! Nicely, nicely done!

Gorgeous color, and amazing cutting work pulled off by BK.

Celle, I reeeeeeeeeeally hope you send these pics to him to show him how pictures should feature the cut. His (photos) look nothing like this, and it's a shame because he does really nice work.

VERY nice finished gems! That big one would look good in a pendant I think.

Thanks D&T!

Allison - I totally agree that his photos don''t show off his cuts. I''ve mentioned it to him before, and I think he''s got a couple of new things in the works... Seriously, I just want to go over there with my cheap camera and help him out!

Haywood, I''m glad you like them. Have you sent off your JXR rough yet?
