Muzo Emerald Education please?

Hope you professionals can give me some advice.

My jeweller's old client wants to sell her emerald ring which bought in 2022 because she never has a chance to use it. It's a 4.49ct muzo emerald (with GRS report, vivid green and minor oiled). The platinum ring setting contains in total 1.01ct F/G grade diamonds. The asking price is $18783usd.

My jeweller did not comment on the stone as he's not a specialist on emerald. But he did point out a stone over 4ct from the muzo mine and minor oiled was quite rare as far as he understood.

The seller only sent him one photo but will send more when she back from holiday. From the photo I can see the stone is not as clear, but is it normal for such a big stone?

My question is does a stone certified by GRS as Muzo minor oiled necessarily a fine emerald? What else I should look into please?

Many thanks in advance.

Do you happen to know the color grading on the GRS report as well?

The certification by GRS is sound but there’s more to emerald value than country of origin.
Minor oil, if stated as such on the report, is acceptable by most. To the purists only a completely natural gem matters.
It’s hard to assess from the photo but the emerald looks fairly included. While inclusions are to be expected, top emeralds are preferred “clean to the eye”.

It's a pretty color and may be a terrible photo or quite dirty, but it looks like commercial-grade -- more diffusely cloudy than it is "gemmy" (good crystal) with visible inclusions as @T L points out above. I know it's apples and oranges and comparison is the thief of joy and all that but $18K is real money and you are mostly paying for size and origin (and minimal treatment) but not, I fear, overall quality.

I'm perplexed that a vendor would offer it to you with only one crummy picture from the current owner. (That's how you'd sell a 15-year-old Camry.) It seems like the laziest possible route to re-selling so that does not fill me with confidence.

You definitely need more photos! And a video

Fine is a tricky word that’s thrown around a lot and on the internet it’s hard to determine whether people who are giving you advice about fine stones actually even own any.

This would be one of those situations where if you can get more videos/pictures of the ring (or view it in person), you love it and the price is fair, then you should go for it!

Do keep us updated! I would love to see more pics! I adore emeralds!

Thanks and this is what I am concerned as well, it looks quite included. I have another jeweller offered me a preloved Colombian emerald halved the price of this Muzo stone, with no/insignificant oil, 1.37ct and comes with a nice setting. The stone is eye clean.

Thanks and I admit the size and origin are the only things that caught my eyes. Its a poor photo, but I can still see its quite included. I was hoping it could be a nice investment piece but somehow the clouded area didn't make my heart sing!
At the same time another jeweller I know for years offer a preloved 1.37ct Colombian emerald with GIA. No/ insignificant oil and eye clean, only halved the price of this Muzo stone.

Thanks for the link. It's the Muzo Green designation the report mentioned. I never thought of the differences thanks for telling me

@Maria L, if it is Muzo Green, there should be a special appendix . The designation is not given to stones that are highly included.
How old is the gem report? if it is a few years old, it needs a re-cert. A lot can happen in a few years, it could be re-oiled, had resin added, damaged, etc.
if you like, please check my Muzo Green emerald thread.

The other thing to be sure about is that the stone in the ring that is being sold is the one that was tested. Of course it could be a bad photo, but one can never be too careful.

Oh, @mellowyellowgirl! Alexander would be so thrilled to hear that. My sister thinks of the pear now and then too! She has such a great time at the boutique
BTW I I found a couple of smaller (but not too small pear emeralds, and some huge items. Will post to either the “considering” thread or Minerva thread,

I just died a little at the price, but I'm a bargain person. At that budget, I'd look at something like these. They should GLOW.

You can also get in touch with gildedlane (not affiliated, outside my budget too) - she has the most beautiful emeralds, you can see that she loves them. This one is beautiful imo
