Hello. This is my first post in these forums, though I''ve been lurking for a while. My significant other and I have been looking at rings recently and I know (very specifically) what I want (it won''t be a surprise! http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/images/smilies/28.gif). I would like a well-cut irradiated blue diamond in a gelin abaci tension setting. I know that irradiated diamonds is a somewhat contentious subject on the forums (some people don''t like the look at all) but I love the bright, bold blues, even if they do look "unnatural."

I''ve been able to locate some jewelers who are able to get in blue diamonds, the only problem is they aren''t very well cut. Is it possible to somehow locate a well-cut (AGS 0) irradiated blue diamond? If I had to choose, I would say the diamond''s fire is more important than the color, and I would be willing to get a white diamond if I had to. I suppose I could also locate a badly cut blue diamond and have it recut, but then I would have to budget for that, and I know that''s not inexpensive. Does anyone have any advice concerning this matter, or know whom I might contact to locate a stone of this sort? I''m not planning on buying for another several months, but I know its an intensive process, so I''m starting early. My price limit is about $1500 for the diamond itself (I don''t really want a large stone, anywhere from .25-.75 carats). Thanks!

You might try posting another thread in colored stones...see if the people who read there more often have any additional info that might help you.

For one thing the type of stones which are selected for color enhancement are not going to be AGS0''s, so even finding such a stone is unlikely.

Second, don''t rely on on the idea that an irradiated blue diamond, which might have near or AGS0 specs, will necessarily be better looking than one which has less than ideal specs.

It''s best to look at the stones, and make you selection based on eye appeal, and disregard the cutting specs applied to D-Z RB''s.

In D-Z, cut is king! In fancy colored (irradiated or natural), color is king!

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice! It's rather difficult to find one of these babies. If I wanted a nice white diamond, I would go to whiteflash or whatnot and trust not seeing the stone, so long as the company were reputable. Trusting the eye over the specs is good advice; I suppose it doesn't matter what AGS cut it is so long as it pleases me. I do, however, really want the stone to sparkle (otherwise I'd think about setting a sapphire). I'll keep talking to local jewelers to see if they can get in some more stones that I can look at. If it's okay, I might even take in Rod's photo and say "this is exactly what I want!":-p Thanks again!:)
