A friend would like to have a ring with her children''s birthstones. Any suggestions on where to get something like this? I was thinking maybe Etsy? Many thanks... I think it can be difficult to make multiple gemstones look cohesive so am hoping someone might have some ideas. There will be 3 different stones. Thanks!

Well I think it depends on what the stones are. If they are all purples and blues they will look good together... Even very different stones of a similar shape and size can be put in a lovely setting and look good together.

What stones will you/she be working with?

It would be helpful know...

which birthstones
whether she already has the stones, most Etsy vendors can source stones, they may not be able to source all
a budget/whether she wants gold or silver
styles

For inspiration of multigem rings, check out Arjuna Jane''s JKT three stone ring and Linda W''s Whiteflash padparadscha ring. I think there are a few other multigem and mother''s rings around, but I can''t recall off the top of my head.

Packrat''s current project with Michael E, and Uppy''s current Mahenge spinel ring might be good reading when it comes to figuring out color combinations/proportions/etc.

I know red envelope also does birthstone rings and necklaces...you might want to just have your friend check them out for inspiration.

Yes, I agree it would help to know which birthstones. Some birthstones are found in many colors (e.g., sapphire, garnet) and some can only be one color (e.g., ruby, by definition). So maybe she could play around with different colors to get a more harmonious or even monochromatic look.

JBEG has a three-stone semi-mount that she might be interested in? Otherwise, Etsy is a great idea. Stacking rings are also popular if she''d be willing to go that way, wearing three rings with one stone in each. That way she''s not trying to force stones that might not work well together into a single design.

She wants yellow gold and is thinking $300-$700 total. She would prefer not to get stacking rings. She does not have the stones yet. The stones to be used are:
1) garnet
2) aquamarine
3) pearl or alexandrite

She''s open to a thin eternity band that she can wear with her other rings or a large stand-alone ring. Very open to design ideas and/or vendor suggestions from the experts here. Thanks so much!

Garnet comes in a variety of colours with the more common red pyrope being very inexpensive and easy to find. The same goes for the aquamarine. It’s the third that may have to be adjusted. A pearl just doesn’t quite go together unless it’s the center piece, flanked by the garnet and aqua, but settings for pearls are different which means customization to the setting. Alexandrite is quite expensive even in smaller sizes so I suggest looking at other birthstone alternatives which I’m sure exist.

Eek, that alex does mix things up a little bit. I''d pick up a 3 or 4mm alex from Mutlicolour or DJ Rare Gems, and flank it with a small garnet and a small aqua to create a small three stone band. Liebcor has a three stone setting for 3mm gems that''s pretty inexpensive.

That sounds very nice. Have you ever used Liebcor before? Their prices seem very good!
