Has anyone got any idea what this might be worth please? Ball park so I don''t get ripped off, she took into a local dealer and he took one look without even looking at the paperwork and said "I''ll give you £500 for it"! It is a two part ring, one with the single diamons, then there is a sort of second ring that fits onto it with 6 other diamonds (18 point).

weight: 1 carat
Cut: princess brilliant
colour: G
Clarity: VS1

valued in 1993 at $4,600

Can attach pictures of ring and the 1993 full appraisal if it helps?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Simon

What I would do if you are in the UK is contact an independant appraiser to give you a figure you can use to sell the stone,

http://www.adrian-smith.co.uk/

http://www.jewelleryvaluer.com/index.html

Regrettably it is usual to only recoup around 30 - 50% of what was originally paid for the diamond and that normally means GIA graded stones, without a reliable lab report you can well expect less than that unfortunately. An appraisal would be the next step if I were in your position. I assume the centre diamond is a one carat Princess?

You might find this article helpful too concerning reselling diamonds,

Thanks,

Yes, the main ring is 1 carat the add-on is 6 stones of '18 weight'. Are free appraisals reliable? I have tried to load a couple of pictures, but it is hard to cut 2meg files down to uder 100K so it could roughly be worth around $2k? Would this sort of thing sell on flee bay as I am not sure that my usual site www.specialistauctions.com would have the coverage? Also, due to its ago when appraised, is it likely the value has gone up much, taking into account markets and inflation?

many thanks

The trouble is, without a reliable grading report it is anyone's guess as to what the value of this diamond is and the actual colour and clarity. Really an independant appraisal would be money well spent to get an idea of potential value. I doubt you would get $2k for it regrettably going by the info provided. As the stone does not have a reliable lab grading report, lets assume the colour and clarity grading are not G VS but nearer I colour and SI clarity, which it is possible it could appraise at. Now, similar diamonds with the desirable GIA reports which increase value are selling online for $2 - 2800 thereabouts with all the benefits from buying from a business attached. Your diamond without a lab report will be worth considerably less unfortunately. I strongly advise you to get an updated appraisal from an independant appraiser so you know exactly what you have and what you might be able to sell it for. Diamonds are not good financial investments and I doubt you would find the value has increased on the stone you have, often these types of appraisals are inflated in the first place anyway.

What you have accompanying the main ring is what is called an enhancer by the way.

Sorry to sound glum but selling diamonds on the secondary market is difficult and it is often the case one doesn't recoup much money. You could try Ebay or Craiglist and see what happens, alternatively you could try consignment from a jeweller like-

www.pearlmansjewelers.com This works that the seller advertises the stone if they feel they can sell it and if a sale results they take a commission.

I wish you luck in trying to sell it and hope you are successful!

I can''t help you, but are you aware of what personal info you just posted on the web?

Is that your father in laws name and the address of your inlaws that you posted on the web?

If it were me, I would remove it. But then again, I''m paranoid about web safety. But I would seriously not print that info on the web.

Good luck selling the ring.

Ok,

Thanks, so looks like we should really get a lab test on it, seems like the most sensible way forward! Although, what if it actually is colour G and VS1 as per the appraisal? I currently have an offer of $1600, based on ''as seen'', should I seriously consider taking that, instead of paying the costs of lab tests and then potentially finding it is poorer than currently thought?

Get an appraisal then you will know for sure what a reasonable expectation is.

No - no need for a lab report. You can kill two birds with one stone. Look at the website for Safeguard. They''re the independent valuation arm of the Birmingham Assay Office. They have valuers who go around the UK visiting local jewellers doing appraisals. They normally go to big chain jewellers and visit most of the large towns in the UK. For around £40 they will test your diamond, grade it and then a few weeks later you will receive a valuation report complete with photograph. That will help to sell the diamond because Safeguard are recognised BUT you''re not looking at more than around £500 on the second hand market. Once you have the valuation from Safeguard you could list it on Ebay. It''s coming up to Christmas so you may be lucky but make sure you put a reserve on it.

Good luck.
