I nearly fell off my chair when I looked at the prices of these two pink diamonds:

0.11ct 2P SI Round AUD8,910
0.10ct 3P SI Round AUD7,950

Can they be serious?

What does 2P/3P mean? Are they referring to intensity a la Garry Holloway''s chart (P1-6 and PP1-6)?

Is there an equivalent of a rap chart for fancy colours? Or do folk just pluck a number out of the air when it comes to fancies?

I'm not as up on my fancy prices as I should be, but thinking back to the time I was researching blue diamonds those prices don't surprise me.

Do you have some pictures to show us? They are *not* cheap, but they still aren't in the ourtangeous category, considering their color and rarity.

If I'm not mistaken (I'm not an expert, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong), but Argyle pink diamonds are graded from an intensity of color from 1 to 8. 1 being a deep pink diamond and 8 being a very light (perhaps faint?) pink color. I guess Argyle pinks have this grading scale to better describe the shade and intensity of the pink color.

No pictures at present, but I have asked them to email me if they have any of said diamonds.

Valeria's favourite supplier of coloured diamonds came up with this:

0.09ct.N.Fancy Purplish Pink.IGI Antwerp Certificate.RB Cut.Clarity:SI2.Meas:2.84-2.87x1.76mm.Finish:Good. US$390

Now, why the big difference? Does the provenance of the stone matter in the pricing? How can you tell, anyway?

Yes. Argyle grades its pinks on that P1-8 scale (not 1-6), 1 being the most intense color. So 2-3 is close to being top color. That probably explains the price differential, since GIA Fancy pink is a lot lighter, close to a 7-8 if Garry's chart colors are accurate. Light pink diamonds are lot more common (though still very rare) than deep pinks.

There is no equivalent to the Rapaport Price List for fancy colors. It's a specialist's market only.

For ref, a fancy intense pink, 0.12 cts, VVS1 (GIA) came my way at USD.1300. A baguette of similar specs was sold by the same fancydiamonds.net and is still on their "sold items" list.

No idea what those down-under numbers are about, but your "buchet" pricing method could be involved. However, such numbers are NOT uncommon: recently, a rather rare shade of fancy intense greenish-blue VS (also GIA, color origin certificate only) went out from the same shop at about 6k. A deep blue peer at Icestore is lookind down at eve that. Go figure. I gave up a long time ago.

To be honest, as long as such accent stones are decently clean, macroscopic and pink enough to justify the name, they are right for me. The very best colors (as those Argyle mai be) and clarities really have NO price, as you can see. My guess... such oddities are of collection interest, while anything below top is not. Just a hunch, of course. there is no straighforward pricing logic in this market, if there ever was one.
