More help needed please....Diamond studs and Diamond Pendant

Hi everyone,

I am on to my next jewelry project/purchase for my beautiful wife (yes, more hand shots, side shots, and close-ups are on their way for the engagement ring re-set).

I am thinking diamond studs and a diamond pendant necklace for her.

The earrings:

The diamond studs would be round, 1.0-1.5 ct tw.in white gold. Also, diamond jackets, with 3-5 pointers, too, in white gold.

I have read all over that color and clarity are much less important with earrings, so I am thinking that maybe I should look at G-I color stones, with SI clarity? I would consider J, too, if well cut.

There are non-certified eye clean sets of stones at a particular vendor in the Diamond District of Chicago I saw that were really low priced, compared to what I have seen online and researched. I am talking around $1700 for 1.13 ct tw, $2500 for 1.35 ct tw, $2,600 for 1.5 ct tw. These were graded by the jeweler himself (so that could mean just about anything). These were labeled as G color and SI1. They were surprisingly sparkly and white, for the prices offered, I must admit. I have alway been a stickler for CIA certification and colorless stones that were very clean so far, but I was and am really tempted by what I saw in person, especially for those prices.

The pendant:

I am thinking a 0.75-1.3 ct pear shaped diamond. I have twelve spare 7 pointers and I have 10 spare 10 pointers I would incorporate into the necklace, too. I would put a halo around the pear to add size.

I like the look of a pear/tear-drop for a necklace and I am hoping it will look big and sparkle, too!

Any ideas or suggestions on pear diamonds and necklace ideas are most welcome!

Thank you all very much!

Re: More help needed please....Diamond studs and Diamond Pen

I'll tell you, the uncertified diamonds that I had in the past were all lower in either color or clarity once I had them appraised. I just wouldn't do it. I would rather have a 1.0 ctw pair of ideal cut stones that could potentially be upgraded or used as sidestones for a 3 stone ring, for example, than an uncertified pair I might regret. Never have I regretted going for quality.

The good thing about .5 each is that it is a great size if you are going to buy her the jackets. I like the 3 pointers best, and that will really add diameter to the diamonds when she wants to dress them up.

I love a pear diamond necklace! I would use smaller stones for that halo, though, like 1 pointers, maybe, and use your 7 pointers bezeled as a diamonds-by-the-yard chain. Somebody here has one and I don't know if I can find it through a search or not, but I will try.

Save the 10 pointers for another project!

Here is one necklace made by WhiteFlash. If I were making this, I would not have the three stone drop to the pear part....I'd just have one round bezel with the pear attached and make the chain 18", probably.

I love the idea of a pearshape pendant. It is such a pretty classic look and the halo will definitely make it look larger.

On the diamond earrings, I would stick to stones with the GIA lab reports so you know what you are getting.

Hi,

I'm also one who would stick with certified stones with earrings. You may hear that earrings aren't as important, but they are...reason being that hair & face products tend to gunk up earrings and the better cut they are, the more they will sparkle even if a bit of cream or face powder gets on them. Some gals leave their earrings in 24/7 so you want to be sure they still look good after a day or two between cleanings. Also, a good deal isn't as good of a deal if the stones aren't actually what the jeweler claims they are (and chances are they're a bit lower if they're uncertified). If you can get certified stones that are H SI1 or something similiar, they'll look bright, white and should be eye clean (talk to vendor to be sure). If you're considering shopping locally, invest in an ideal scope so you can get a better look at the stones light return because jewelry store lighting can be deceptive.

Re: More help needed please....Diamond studs and Diamond Pen

Thank you for the advice on sticking with certified studs. I will do more research on certified studs, preferably ones with GIA certification.

Any thoughts on princess studs versus round studs? I would get her jackets for either style and her engagement ring is a rectangular radiant with a halo. I was told that princess look be more appealing with her engagement ring, though my wife does have rounds in her wedding band worn on the other hand.....

Also for the pear pendant, I would halo that stone with 3 pointers and my wife prefers to see the stones. I am not sure what is a good size for the diamond itself? I think that pears face up larger than other shapes, which is great for myself and my wallet! Would a 1 ct pear with 3 pointers forming a halo around the stone suffice? Would 3/4 look too small?

I don't feel the need to go colorless for the pear, unlike her other diamond jewelry so far. I am thinking G-J maybe? My wife likes big, lol.

This is stressful, even more than her other gifts! HELP haha

I vote for rounds only on the ears. Keeping square stones turned right on the ears would be a major pain. Plus, I think halos would make the problem worse.

Easiest place I know of to get well matched pairs of ideal cut diamonds for studs is WhiteFlash.

Yep, I'd go for rounds also, and check out AGS certified through WF. I got AGS F studs from them and they were bright white!

Ditto this. The beauty of rounds is you have no idea if they are out of whack... because they never are!

I'm loving the pear pendant idea - I think if you are haloing it, .75 would be a good size, but who's gonna say no to a 1ct??? :wink2:

Re: More help needed please....Diamond studs and Diamond Pen

Ok....So, I wound up finding a great pair of princess cut studs. 1.04 ct tw F color and SI1. I am having custom jackets made, to fit the princess cut studs, but with rounded corners.

As for the pear, I am wondering how low in color I can go with a VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT cut diamond. Is I or J ok? It will be halo'd and anywhere from 1-1.5ct in size.
