What's your opinion?

I'm considering a ring design with a mix of either white and rose or white and yellow gold. I really like the combination of pink and gold but my problem is this; I have one ring that is a pink stone with white gold. The other ring (worn with it potentially) would be a golden hued stone. I'm considering setting that stone in yellow gold to bring out the gold tones and wearing them together.

Is white and yellow gold an absolutely horrible combination? I associate it with really dated looking jewelry from the 80's, but feel it could potentially be well done... would rose and white maybe be a better compromise? Warm and cool metal without such a harsh contrast?

My preference is white and rose gold but I love white and yellow too. I guess I am no help after all lol... All gold are beautiful!!

One issue I always wondered about: how do you replate the white gold?

What is dated one day is fashionable the next. You have to wear what pleases you. When you mentioned something looking dated because it was an '80's look I almost laughed. I have no idea what an '80's look is. I'm a pre-'80's person.

Having said that, the design of the piece of jewelry may affect whether it looks better all in one color or in two or even three colors. A ring with three braids may look good in one color, two colors, or even three.

If you have a specific design in mind, maybe you should run it by people. Or just do what pleases you. :))

I hope you have fun designing it.

I'm sick of rose gold.

*runs away*

ETA: Ok, I had to come back and say that you might wanna browse through DBL stuff because they do a lot of metal mixing in their rings since they use lots of colored diamonds.

I like white and yellow AND I like white and rose.
The only two color combo I wouldn't wear is yellow and rose. Add in some white and I'm okay again. I guess I'm just used to seeing the three tone look, though I don't see it much anymore.
In fact, just today, I was wishing that my little pave bands were yellow or rose, to wear with my solitaire. I guess I was finding the all white look dull on this snowy day :)

It was my dear mother who got the idea in my head when she said "Oh! White and yellow gold together was really popular in the 80's!" and got this image in my brain. No offense to anyone who has or loved this ring it's just not me

I love white and yellow, white and rose, white/yellow/rose... My grandmother has some that are yellow/rose that work beautifully. I'm meh on many but love some of those. I think it really depends on the design and what you love.

Oh... There is also nothing wrong with having different colors of bands/stackers and swapping it up to match your mood for the day!

I'm going to say this and then run... I am a child of the 80's, and two tone rings scream promise rings and 80's sprayed bangs- at least white and yellow gold pieces. There are antique pieces with the setting white and shank yellow gold which I think are the lovely exception (or where the bezel is yellow to accent color in a stone). White gold and pink gold definitely go together!

Lol, I am an 80s child too! I don't remember yellow and white gold mixed but I remember big chunky yellow! I mix my metals every day. Rarely do I not have both platinum and yellow gold on. I love both but I really LOVE them mixed. Not a rose gold fan.

Bows head and runs away with @monarch64

I mix metals all the time. I love white (white gold and platinum) and yellow and rose gold together or separately. It all works in my opinion.

Here is rose gold with yellow gold and white gold and platinum all mixed together.

Some might say it's OTT but I say "The More the Merrier" when it comes to bling.

You and I have similar hands. I have heard you call them man hands and I have always called mine that too! Man hands were made for stacking! I can easily wear 5 thin bands, lol. And always in an interesting mix of metal!

Wear what makes you happy!

I have a 3 metal necklace, white and yellow bangles, rose and white ring. It was too hard (and costly) to buy matching sets of everything so I just mix it all up now!

Add me to the list of those that don't remember mixed metals being "of the '80s" but I do like the look.
Rose gold doesn't look good with my skin tone so I only have one ring in rose gold (which doesn't get worn, poor thing!).
But I do have one yellow/white gold ring; it's a yellow bezel (in case the pic isn't clear) with a white gold band; it was custom.
That's it for rings for me - I do have some '90s necklaces that are mixed gold (no gems and also, sadly, not worn) and a watch that I love that's stainless with yellow gold accents.

ETA: sorry the pic is so huge - not sure how to resize it!

It’s funny how what you like changes over the years. When I was younger I would have never mixed metals, now I love the look.

I think that's more what I'm getting at. The two tone "maul" store promise rings and such. I think it will be either look fantastic or drive me absolutely insane if I don't execute the design right, hence the fun of the challenge lol!

One issue I always wondered about: how do you replate the white gold?

I think I would be ok if the rhodium plating wore off over time. I like the soft look of unplated gold.

I think they put something on the rest of the piece so the plating doesn't adhere. The first time I took my 2 tone ring in for repolishing i'm pretty sure he replated it b/c it came back super white and shiny on top but the yellow wasn't affected. i like unplated gold as well but sometimes the plating doesn't' wear off evenly :/

We are snowed in and I was itching to do a project. I took the golden hued moissanite I'm deciding on a gold color for out of its sterling silver home. My daughter says "Mommy can you make me a ring?" So I did! Silver setting, krazy glue, a glass pear from my junk drawer, and some glitter nail polish later and she has a ring fit for a queen

I went from wearing only 24K gold to wearing no jewelry at all to wearing only one pair of earrings (to keep the holes in my pierced ears open). They happen to be silver. They look good on me with my very short hair, but also they are easy to put into my ears with their simple hooks: dangling mesh Elsa Peretti earrings with pearls at the bottom. I wouldn't mind mixing. I just don't seem to be doing it.

@Elliot86 here’s rose gold with yellow gold and platinum in there too. Wore this rose gold band with the pink diamonds yesterday because your thread inspired me.

Both rings got some hand cream on them unfortunately as we were out all day and it’s cold and dry but snapped a photo for you anyway.

Haha kitty photo bombing again. She’s a sweet baby our Francesca. :kiss2:

Guess I get bored with everything matching.

I mix always; yellow gold, rose gold, platinum, white gold and sterling.

I could go on and on, but you get the general idea :lol-2:

I voted white & yellow for your particular project but I think all metal colours can be mixed together. I wear a Cartier Trinity & it looks pretty darn nice. I don't have any rose gold as I'm not sure it goes with my skin tone. I may be able to pull off a darker rose gold but haven't tried that yet. I am pre-80's era & all I remember from the 80's is the abundance of yellow gold. LOL

I think I have ruled out rose gold... I held the stone up against a 14k rose gold stacking band today and it was just not right. The stone is a chameleon, it's a really beautiful ivory white moissanite, fantastic Asscher cut. It may come down to a coin toss between white and yellow gold haha!

This is what I'm thinking. It is an awful picture, but I want to basically wear 2 Lotus rings together as my engagement ring in a bypass style. Since I already own the pink one I would set the Asscher and solder them together. I love the two stones together and "moi et toi" as a style. Very old world and romantic. I was originally going to sell the pink and put it towards a blingier Lotus setting for the Asscher, but then it occurred to me that I could just wear both and call it one ring :appl:

This is the profile, so imagine two of them, bypass style.

Hi Elliot,

This is a very fun thread - It brought out some really unique bling - very cool.

When you finish this project, make sure to come back with pics!

I'm sure it's just personal preference but I don't like to mix my metal colors, whether within one piece or different pieces worn at the same time (with the exception of white metal prongs on yellow gold pieces).

I can never wear all one colour metal, it just looks bland to me. Looks good on others, don’t love it on me.
I love your toi et moi idea!
