OMG.... OMG....OMG.... Freke................

An emotional week....

Amid everything that there is for us to become distracted with, like the neverending bad news, the economy, the politics, the holidays and the shopping that''s expected of us, I am once again reminded of the important.

Thursday night after learning about Freke''s Mom, I was thrust into shock and despair as I shared her loss. So much so, that I completely forgot the next morning that I wasn''t supposed to go to work, but was supposed to be at jury duty. I remembered at 10 minute to 5:00 p.m. Just a little late to appear. I was able to postpone the date via telephonic assistance.

Friday, after work, I had to go return those impulse buy sunglasses and get a baby shower gift for Saturday so I got home later than usual and proceeded immediately to check my email because me and another member of my "Department of Peace" activist group were in charge of organizing the Holiday party for this coming Tuesday. I saw the expected emails, but was confused by the subjects. I opened the most recently received email and it confused me, but in no uncertain terms, I understood that the Holiday party was being cancelled in light of the sudden and tragic death of our leaders only son. I was bewildered. I immediately scrolled up to find out what was going on, I couldn''t believe what I was reading. This couldn''t be happening. THIS CANNOT HAPPEN!!!

John and Jan Atkinson are two beautiful and loving souls who have been the Co-Presidents of our organization and are examples of inspiration like very few others. They have one son, Rob, who was the light of their life. He just turned 22 on Tuesday and was away at college in Texas. Rob was a fascinating and inspiring young leader who embraced his parents non-denominational spirituality and activism. He started the first Student Peace Alliance at his campus in his junior year and his parents could not have been more proud. I spent quality time with Rob and knew that he was destined to contribute so much in his life.

However, those other emails informed me that Rob''s life was tragically ended at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday evening when he was struck by a vehicle while he was crossing a street on campus. The driver was also a student, only 20 years old and he is devasted. There was no alcohol and no charges pending, it was just an accident. It is not surprising that Rob would be so well known on a campus of only 1250 students. Reports indicate that they have never seen such an outpouring of emotion over a student so they have kept the counseling office open 24 hours a day.

I was inconsolable.

For the nearly two years that I have known this family, I have been awestruck at their capacity to love everyone. To literally be the change they wish to see in the world. They are well supported on a national level because of their leadership and their spiritual network, so that comforts me. Yet I just can''t imagine the pain of losing your only child. Not at any time. But especially at this time...just as he was making plans for his life after his graduation in May. It was his desire to work full time with the Peace Alliance. As a mother of an only child, I can''t begin to imagine having to bear the grief my friend is going through at this time. I am grateful she has an amazingly loving husband, and a large network of support. They will both need it. But even then, how does one cope with that level of suffering?

This reminds me of what is important. Not the right bathroom, not the perfect outfit, not worrying about the gray in our hair, but the fact that this life is so precious...so unpredictable...so short. Love is really the only thing that outlives us all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Rob ( my son is named Rob) sounds like he was a remarkable young man. What a tragic accident that was.. I will send prayers to his parents, they must be beyond themselves right now. And send a big hug to you Miracles. These are tough times for sure. They raised a caring and loving son, he will live on in their hearts.

We all ache for Freke.

Sending prayers your way. Lisa

I am so sorry, miracles...my heart goes out to you and his parents. Hang in there...big hugs!

Thank you Ladies...I made it through the "celebrations of life" and it was amazing how strong and courageous his mother and father were during their talks with us. I will share them with you soon. His memorial montage is on YouTube and I will post a thread in the near future, but I have exciting news I need to share first. His influence helped us achieve the following and so it is in Rob''s honor and loving memory that I help his dream be fulfilled.

Many of you know that I have been fruitlessly advocating for a U.S. Department of Peace and Non-Violence that would appoint a cabinet level Secretary of Peace. Wellllllll, as we know, it was fruitless for a number of reasons, not the least which was the administration and the culture of Americans in believing that "Peace", as a goal, is equal to "Weakness" .

Sooowa, I can''t begin to tell you how thrilled I was when Change.gov was initiated right after Obama was elected. He promised a more transparent and interactive government. In response to this, the founders of Facebook, MySpace Impact, MyBarackObama, and a few other alternative networking media types initiated a site named Change.org. The premise was to solicit ideas for change from the American public. They had 10 categories that included health care, economy, enviroment, etc... We placed the Department of Peace in the category of "Other". At the end of the year, the top three ideas in each category were put up for voting. Each citizen was allowed 10 votes to disperse among their top 10 ideas for change of the top 30 presented as finalists. We made the top three in the "Other"category, so we qualified to be among the top 30 finalists.

The voting was intense. We had until January 15th at 5 p.m. eastern time when the voting ended. It was crucial to remain in the top 10 because....the top 10 ideas were going to be presented to the Obama transition team during the National Press Club annual luncheon on January 16th. Not only that, but an advocate would be assigned to each of the top ten ideas who would work with the grassroots organization and the public to ensure that the idea was transformed into actual policy.

It was cwaaaazzzzzzy. We started falling out of 10th place at about January 9th, when a few of us sent out a "Code Blue" on Facebook. Then a miracle....Yoko Ono posted the link to vote for our cause about the same time. That catapulted us into 5th place within two days, but we lingered. A huge final push was made by many of us to get the word out and get people involved in their government. I pulled an all-nighter and am proud to say that we came in ......2nd Place!!!!!!

We went from relative obscurity to National Recognition like a car goes 0-60 in 5 seconds. It was amazing. Our national conference is March 20-23 when the bill will be reintroduced into the 111th Congress and you-know-who will there in the flesh.
41.gif

There is a Shift in the Air...and I couldn''t be more proud of the American public right now. However, there is much work to be done to repair our broken down world, yet I feel optimistic. Obama even knows the bill number now
6.gif
This means that the representative who introduces the bill this year will have to wait in a line in order to drop the bill so that it gets the same number assigned. This will save us the reprinting costs for pamphlets.

Wooohooooo, I am doing the Happy Dance. It''s a new dawn...it''s a new day....

I''ll have even better news for you soon.

Perhaps you should check your space more often.

Hahaha, I know. I''m bad.

VRBeauty!!! Thank you. It saddens me. Truly. I understand that everyone has their "no negotiation" standards...but you know what I mean. We get where we are coming from. :::sigh::: How are you????

Yipppeeee, I get to start posting in anticipation of my Grandchild.

All the gory details will be here, whether good or bad, happy or sad. I am praying for an uneventful and joyous pregnancy with a safe and relatively painless birth. (Labor should never be easy...it prepares you for motherhood).

In the past my daughter was adamant that she was going to be like Edina on AbFab and for her labor she desired "Total sensory deprivation...and back up drugs"!!

However, after becoming scared to even get pregnant due to the stories of all her friends and their "emergency c-sections" and extended hours of scary labor, she has decided to go natural. I have been harping on her for years about that, but it only became a decision after I recommended that her and her DH watched "The Business of Being Born". After that she did a lot of research and even decided that she wasn''t afraid to get preggo.

She had her first appointment two weeks ago with a birthing center and will be using a midwife and doula. They have surgeons on staff too, but it is definately not a hospital. She had her first ultrasound which we lovingly refer to as the "Gummy Bear". It''s sort of gross, but it is what it is...

OMG my daughter is....

She looks radiant! It will be fun to see regular update pictures with the same pose

Yay for natural birth! People think I''m crazy when I say that''s normal where I come from. I hope it works out for your daughter.
So is she due around her first year anniversary?

Thanks choro!! I told her that she needs to find another picture location unless she wants to drive back to her old place everytime she wants to take pictures. They will be moving before the baby is born, so I told her to find a spot in the office to take one every week also.

She is due exactly One year and two months after her wedding date of 7/25/08. Due date 9/25/09. She heard the baby''s heartbeat yesterday and she called me all excited. I remember hearing her heartbeat like it was yesterday.

She looks fab! My sister is due the same time as your daughter, funny!

Yeah Skippy, another Libra baby in the world!!

Imagine my shock when I saw this picture of her while at a bachelorette party in Vegas this weekend. Still trying to be a cheerleader. I wanted to say "Hey!! Not while your preggo, dork!" But I''m sure it just looks more strenuous than it was. They must have had a bouncy bed in that hotel room.

I have been so remiss on keeping up with my thread, but that is because I have been working like a madwoman...UGH! I guess I should be grateful that I am employed and quit complaining. But I do have an updated picture of the Belly!! Do you think we could start a Baby Shower Idea thread??? That''s my new job.... Here she is at 26 weeks...
