hi all - new to the forum, and i have found some great information, so I wanted to thank everyone!

I just bought my girlfriends engagement ring, and all thru the process, i was either told stay away from fluorescence, or go with a Medium Blue Florescence as an added bonus for an H color, round diamond. I am just a bit confused about this diamond. Looking at the ring in day light (not a cloud in the sky), the diamond looks blue.

What exactly is making the diamond look blue? would it be the florescence or just a reflections of the sky???

Sky reflection. You may see a tiny hint of lavender with bright sunlight or in a night club with black lights, but I will tell you truthfully that I never saw medium blue in my original diamond in 25 years. I wouldn't worry a second about medium blue. My current diamond has strong blue and I love it.

Ditto. The blue is the reflection from the sky. My 1.5 ct F VS2 has medium blue fluor, and I will detect a pale lavender tint from the sunlight. This happens when I'm driving and the ring is in the car and so it isn't reflecting the blue from the sky. My car has a beige interior, so I'm pretty sure it is the fluorescence.

I have another diamond with strong blue fluor, and I never see any tint unless it is under a UV lamp. A little disappointing I don't see any tint in the sun, but it all depends on the exact UV wavelength that excites the electrons to cause the fluorescence when they drop back to the unexcited state. That's why we can't be sure of the effect on any particular diamond. They vary.

Thank you so much! Really appreciate the additional info!
