Wellington is 8 years old. has been gradually losing weight since last fall, around the same time my older cat started being treated for kidney disease. Because of that, wet food was left out at all times. So, I feel he is eating less in total and mostly wet food instead of dry. That would certainly contribute to weight loss, but the last 2 months the loss has been drastic. I'm wondering if something else is going on. The attached labs are from his dental exactly a month ago - everything was fine, 2 extractions. Teeth and gums look great! During the dental his lymph nodes were not swollen, and nothing unusual was felt. Sometimes, at that time, he was fake puking - going through the motions but nothing came out. He hasn't done that in a while, though.

Today I didn't see him eat and he won't purr for me. I gave him Fancy Feast and he ate 3 bites and then walked away. Things were fine 2 days ago (before my husband went out of town). You'll notice his platelets were a little high, indicating a recent bleed, which was likely the bad tooth he had removed. I weighed him today and he is 12.2 pounds. Last September he was 16.8 pounds. He is not throwing up or having diarrhea. He does kind of seem nauseous because he licks his lips when I put food in front of him but then he turns away.

Gonna try to get him in to see his vet in the morning. Anything I should ask about? X-Ray? Anyone have any experience with this?

My neighbor is fostering kittens so I've been helping buying the wet food - fancy feast kitten tender turkey or something turkey. I perused reviews and some people give this food to senior cats with teeth problems and are losing weight. For 60 cents a can it's worth a shot.

Also try warming food a little.

Since its warm out now it's shedding season. Perhaps there is a hairball obstruction. Ask the vet about that?

Check thyroid.

Bring a stool sample.

Sending all the dust to you and Wellington, LAJen. I don't have anything to offer because I haven't had kitties for years and years, sorry. I hope Wellington's health improves.

Thanks, Pinto and Monie. I will get the FF kitten food for sure. Also, his blood work from a month ago is now posted. His thyroid is fine. This weight loss started months ago, it is just now getting to where I think it is concerning. You are right about shedding season, I had been giving him laxatone for a while, but slacked off when Seth's kidney disease got worse and he started having puke marathons every nine days. Seth is hanging in there - not worried about him at the moment. Wellington is just, off.

Sending you and Wellington bucket loads of healing *****DUST*****. That is an alarming weight loss (huge percentage of beady weight in a short time) and I agree bring him to the veterinarian today. Sending Wellington lots and lots of good luck and healing vibes. And (((HUGS))) to you both.

I've had two boys do similar things. One had a bowel obstruction from what looked like impacted hairballs (he was a longer haired guy) and the other had inflammatory bowel issues. But hopefully your vet can see what's causing your furbaby's symptoms and get him better again. It's so hard when they are sick and can't tell us what's wrong.

Sending you and Wellington lots of dust! I'm so unfamiliar with cats but my dog lost weight last year (from about 92-73lbs over several months if memory serves). He is usually ravenous but was turning away his food often. We put him through a range of tests trying to pinpoint the problem. We never found anything and he eventually started eating normally again. At that time, we added a can of wet food a day to get his weight up. He's now back to 86-88lbs and doing well. We certainly feared the worst so I can understand how worried you must be!

Hopefully this is a quick, easy, painless fix!

Everything crossed for Wellington.

Sorry to hear about the cat medical problems. This is completely unrelated but my cat had an unknown issue and we had the option of going through tests or doing trial and error with various cat foods. It was a long process but eventually was resolved. Hoping the same will be in your situation. May your vet provide some clarity and direction! Keep us posted! Hope Wellington is happy, healthy, and purring in no time!

Sending good kitty vibes out to Wellington!

Sending lots of kitty dust your way!

I won't say it's the same situation (fast forward to the end first..my cat is deceased):blackeye:. My cat had a long period of losing weight. She was almost 10 years old and had loose stool for quite some time (years! o_O). We tried lots of things to fix that without results (so it may or may not be related to her diagnosis). Anyway, I brought her to the vet a couple times because I knew something was wrong. They told me that she was fine and she was just getting older, which is why she was losing weight. Fast forward 5 months and she had lost a lot more weight. I brought her back and insisted there was something wrong with her. This time the vet listened and ran some tests. Sadly, my little girl had colon cancer. She didn't live much longer after that. I miss her sweet face. :saint:

Anyway, the vet told me to give her baby food, on days when her regular food was not appetizing. She loved the baby food and almost always ate that. As long as it's onion free, they can have it (that usually leaves a chicken and turkey option). I doubt it's healthy for long term use but it works for the short term. Give it a try.

Lots of love and healing vibes from here!

So much healing dust to Wellington and dust to you during this stressful time.

Thanks, everyone, for the dust and suggestions. I bought a bunch of Fancy Feast and Baby Food today since he will be on antibiotics (Clavamox) for a while (starting tomorrow).

I took him first thing this morning. I walked in right after they opened, and told Anna (the receptionist) that I didn't have an appointment. She said, "I'm going to pretend that you do" and got me in immediately. His regular vet is on vacation this week, so he saw a different doctor. The exam was good - he said his condition looked and sounded good. We did an x-ray and it was all clear. No obstruction, tumors, or constipation. His colon was clear except for one small piece of feces at the very end. There was also food in his stomach, so apparently he ate at some point last night. We repeated the blood work from a month ago and will have the results tomorrow. The doctor was quick to associate the illness with his FIV+ status. I asked if he was dying and he chuckled and said, "oh, no no no. Nothing like that." So hopefully he bounces back soon. I asked about lymphoma and he shook his head and showed me on his last blood work that his lymphocytes were a little low and said if it were lymphoma they would actually be elevated.

He was a little dehydrated so they gave him sub-q fluids. They also gave him a penicillin injection, a B-12 injection, and a Prednisolone (steroid) injection.

He was out and about a little while ago and ate a few bites (very little) and is now under my bed.

For some reason my cats were never enticed by baby food, but usually responded well when I added a little clam juice to their wet food. All I can offer besides that is… Lots of dust for improvement!

He also groomed himself today. That is good sign, I guess.

Jen, Sending lots of dust to both you and Wellington.
