may be taking a plunge on a 1.9 OMC... please advise!

Oh, and my earrings are OMCs ::) I'm going to try to make the pendant match them in style, so there will be quite a bit of silver in the setting.

Love it! Is the new oec going to be an rhr? How are you planning on setting it?

The new OEC is going to be a pendant. I think the setting will be very close to how the earrings are set, except with a gold bail instead of the ear wire. And maybe some modification of the prongs so they don't look so heavy duty. But I like the dark silver look. And I want the pendant to be relatively heavy, so it'll be much cheaper in silver.

Thanks for asking. I'm excited, needless to say :))

Congratulations on the incredible ebay find!! that diamond looks lovely under the loop and very good colour match (in the joint pic) with your ering! I knew the right stone would be out there for you - and how wonderful that you found it at a bargain!! Congratulations Gemfever!!

Oh it's lovely! What a great find GemFever!

Thanks gals! ::)

Oh wow! Nice find! Gotta love that checkerboard! That's awesome that you found those on eBay! I'm always a miss with those things!

Thanks YayTacori! I'm glad to have my own ebay find & deal, but man, did it take a lot of work. Like a full time job! It's gonna be nice to stay off ebay for a while. But I'll probably be back someday  Quite addictive.

Addictive, but so much fun! Can't wait to see the finished product. It sounds like rustic awesomeness with the darkened silver.

Congrats! It's beautiful! Can't wait to see what your pendant looks like :)

Very nice. I saw that one on ebay and thought the cut looks phenomenal.

Do you have any idea what the grade making inclusion(s) is (are)? It looks like a large -- chip? on the pavilion?

Madelise: thanks! Whenever it's finished, I'll definitely post in SMTB!

Dreamer: I posted the inclusions plot earlier, and I finally found the big chip -- it's hidden under one of the prongs. I'll include some more pics, which show the chip and also the color. I also think the cut is awesome. A little different from my ering, maybe a little later cut?

I love the chunky patterns on both of those rings!

It is a really fine example of a later OEC and I think it would do fine in a bezel.

I really really think you should take it to a trusted appraiser or jeweler before you decide to keep it. That is a large chip and I would hate to see the diamond fall apart on you when you unset it or try to reset it.

Thanks for the suggestion Dreamer. The ring technically does not have a return policy, so I'm keeping it. The lab (Northwest Gemological Laboratory, no GIA I understand, but it's something) report mentioned that the inclusions do not present a structural risk, so I'll just keep fingers crossed. Could it really just fall apart? Or would the chip just deteriorate further? I could imagine the latter happening, but I'll hope for the best.

Well I doubt it could fall apart, but you never know, it all depends on the nature of the damage and how it occurred in the first place, and whether the damage is related to a feather or other crack in the stone that poses a risk. Since the documentation suggested there is no risk, then that is good. But it also means that you might have a case if your own appraiser says there IS a risk. I would seek the information.

It IS time for me to get all my stones appraised and insured. High time. Maybe this is the perfect moment to do that. Now, to find appraisers in DC, and the money for this... err.

If you plan to buy things on ebay I recommend forming a good relationship with a jeweler locally who will look at diamonds for you and offer informal opinions about things like durability risk of inclusions. You also need your own tools to confirm measurements, or a jeweler who will do such things for you for minimal cost. I always seek an opinion on a purchase over about $2k and always if the diamond appears to have significant inclusions. Most likely its no problem. But its really best practice to confirm carat weight and structural integrity on ebay diamond purchases.

 There's just SOMETHING about the facet patterns of old cuts all blown up in giant photos… !!!

Madelise -- I know right ::) I can't stop taking pics, though I definitely have enough! So mesmerizing.

Dreamer -- that's a great suggestion, and it would be awesome to have a trusted jeweler like that. Do you have any suggestions for how to find such a jeweler? There are some local shops in my area, but the one I visited seems busy and just didn't give me the vibe that I could form this kind of relationship there. There is still one shop I need to try... but how do I approach them about looking at my stone? I feel like I would need to bring them some business before I ask for their advice on my stones. Perhaps making the custom pendant... I have one person I trust, but she's all the way in NYC, and mailing stuff back and forth is a risk.

For a while I made a habit of basically just going into all the local jewelers and talking to them and browsing. I was looking for a local jeweler to work on stuff for me. I also went to a lot of local pawn/estate shops and talked to the owners, some of whome are GGs, or at least very experience evaluating diamonds to buy for their own resale. I found one person at a pawn/estate shop who likes to chat about old cuts, so we often talk about things I buy -- I use him mostly to affirm my own impressions, he has a jewelers microscope that he lets me use to examine stones and he also has a relationship with a local independent appraiser and sends things to the appraiser for me. I have bought a few things at his store, too, so I am a customer :)) And I formed a relationship with a jeweler as well, who does work for me, pulls stones from mangled settings, and can appraise stuff too. Again, I am a customer of theirs, they did the refurb on my solitaire, but they also do things for me for free if its small and simple, like weighing a loose stone.

Anyways, next time you have some time, pop around to different jewelers. Take your new OEC ring with you and tell them you bought it at an estate auction (ixnay on ebay)and you would like to know more about it, and see what they say! See whom you form a connection with. You know enough from being on PS to evaluate whether they know what they are talking about when it comes to diamonds and old cuts ::)

Dreamer, that's excellent advice. I'll try to do that. It would be useful not only for future ebay purchases, but also for all kinds of resizings and custom jobs. I hope there is a good and friendly jeweler somewhere around here!

Uffff... got it taken out. Chip is biiiig on the underside. Fishtail prongs hid it well. I'm pretty sure that the woman who sold it to me had no idea, as she bought it already set. But the shop that sold it to her... :angryfire:

Anyway, the stone still is beautiful and I love it, so I'm not that upset. More curious now about possibly having it polished out. Probably not right away, because I already contacted DanielM about a custom pendant, and I want to get that done ASAP. But maybe in the future if I want to reset it from the pendant.

Also kind of worried that the chip may make the stone vulnerable during [bezel] setting. Gonna take the risk, I think. Yikes.

Man, it's so pretty though. Looks even whiter now out of the setting.

It looks beautiful in the last photo!!
And I take it, within a bezel the chip will not be visible?

Have you asked Daniel whether he's worked with chipped stones before, and whether there's any additional risk in bezeling it? (If yes, I'm super curious to know what he responded).

Are you still planning to have it bezeled in a style similar to your earrings? Or will it be a regular bezel, just oxidized?

:)

Hey there MimB :)

I'm planning to have it in a 14YG bezel, and that bezel wrapped in some silver. Shall see, shall see...

I did write to DanielM that the stone is chipped, but that I'd take the risk of bezel setting anyway. They haven't responded, but I didn't really ask a direct question in my message. Now I'm thinking it would be better to fix the stone first. A little unsure how to begin and how much it will cost... but, there's a first time for everything, right. Even fixing diamonds

Cheers!

GREAT find! I want to squeeze that baby's little cheeks and hug it and kiss it.

Maccers, I knowwwww! Such a cutie. It's even worse with OMCs, because they're so fat. Extra cheeks to squeeze!
