Hi guys,

I'm considering an ebay stone, 1.98ct OMC, seller says is I and SI2, for $4K. Dimensions: 7.5x7.96x5.23.

What do you think? Good idea, bad? I've asked for additional pics (from the top, and on a hand), will see what the seller says about that. I would be buying it as a solitaire, without the wrap-around band.

All advice welcome. Should I keep prowling ebay, or is this a good find? I wanted to spend under $3K on a 1+ old cut or marquise (or something cool), but this is close to 2 carat... maybe just go for it?

Thanks so much!

- Anya

I wasn't fond of it, but price is fantastic. The old listing didn't have a return policy. Is the seller offering you an inspection/return period?

No, no inspection or return. I'm figuring the no return factor into the price. That's been the tone of our exchanges so far -- I asked for more pics and such because there would be no return.

What made you not fond of it? Just the general OMC-ness of it (as opposed to the prettier faceting of OECs), or something specific?

Thanks for responding!

I feel the diamond might not be very lively. I love a good mine cut, but this one looks really chunky, and not in a good way. If they can provide better head on pics, that'd be great. But based on the pics in the listing, I wouldn't risk $4k on it.

So too chunky can be bad too, huh. I didn't know that. But actually when I first saw it today the thought crossed my mind that it looks practically round. I'll wait for the head-on pics and post them here. Thank youuu!

I'm not a stickler for symmetrical stones, but there's something about this one (in the pics shown) that seems off. The center looks like it'd be dark. If you can convince them to give you a return period, it might be worth a look.

*and by "practically round" I mean spherical, too chunky. Will wait for more pics. Hopefully they'll reveal something about the inclusions, too.

I'll ask about returns when I see the pictures. I have a feeling the SI2 inclusions may be visible, so maybe I'll say I need to see what they look like in person. I feel a bit bad though, it seems like this is a private person trying to sell her family ring... it's nice for the buyer to have a return, but tough for a seller I guess. Gotta try to stop imagining myself in the seller's shoes...

I think its likely dark under the table. The table is too large in my opinion to "carry" the super short pavilion mains. Those are some really large pie chunks under that table with no virtual facets breaking them up, and that often means a lazy center area where only one or two pavilions mains will be lit up at a time, and that is not a good look in my opinion. I suspect that is what FK means by "too chunky", not the outline of the stone. She is likely referring to the faceting pattern. (Correct me if I am wrong of course FK). I could be wrong, but with no returns and such crap photos, I would not risk it.

I also personally am very very leery of and ebay SI2 stone. It usually means a big risky inclusion. With no returns, I would not risk it.

Got three more pics. Do they show anything different?

wow I'm suprized they sent such fuzzy pictures. I would probably past on this. though it is a great price i think it will be really dull in the center with no sparkle.

Thanks for your advice ForteKitty, Dreamer, and Sarahbear. I've written the seller that I won't be buying. Now need to decide whether to go back to ebay prowling, or just lay off for a while. It's not like I *need* another diamond. Maybe I'll spend my spare cash on some clothes this time  Sigh!!!

Thanks again!

I think when it comes to things where you are wondering about and have a niggling feeling that something is holding you back, you've probably done the right thing in this case. "When in doubt - don't!"

There will always be another diamond... and who knows how much more WONDERFUL that next diamond will be!! :))

Thanks Enerchi! I haven't been posting much, but I saw the threads about your OEC project, now that sounds quite wonderful ::) Congrats on that!

Thanks Gemfever!! Your turn will come --- you'll find a HUGE & BEAUTIFUL OEC/OMC when it is the right one for you! That's part of what I learned when setting - don't just set it, set it in the one that works best for you and the stone. Its like team work - both have to work well and help support each other to their best potential!!

Your diamond is out there... :praise:

I'm still not convinced. Good call on not buying it.

This stone is a nice price and it might be able to be recut for $2-300 per carat with out losing too much diameter. The depth is 67.5%. If they had a return policy it might be worth the risk of taking a look at it. Just another idea for a small budget.

Ariel, I thought about that... But I really wasn't looking to spend $4K in the first place, or to get a diamond of that size. It would be a bit of a shock to my budget. So I was hesitant to go that route. Of course, if the seller emails me back tonight and says -- sure, I'll list it with a return policy for you... I may give it another thought. But I doubt this will happen.

Thanks for the idea though!

Also, forgot to mention -- I think the SI2 inclusions are probably noticeable under the table (Dreamer cautioned against those inclusions too). There seems to be a hint of that in the blurry picture. So that's another con. Unless the seller wants to drop the price some more. Which is unlikely.

Yeah, not without a return policy.

Just a thought but have you contacted Adam at OWD or Jbeg? I think they are very good with working around on budgets and possible getting you something you will love! It might not be 2cts for under 4k, but hey you will never know until you try. I just purchased a 2.08ct from JBEG that was practically a steal. It is an I1 with a rather large inclusion on the side but it just don't bother me. Call me bizarre but I love the look of antique diamonds that aren't perfect. I then purchased matching OEC's as sides from OWD. I think OWD had better pricing and Adam was wonderful to work with.

That's a good idea, Sarahbear. I do like the hunt on ebay, but... it's taking way too much time out of my day. And it's risky. And what's even more risky is spending all my spare cash on little pretty pieces that I come across but don't really need. So perhaps I should just contact Adam and see what he has. Just as soon as I finish watch and bidding on all the pretty things on my watchlist! Ebaying takes discipline. Not ebaying takes even more discipline!

P.S. Sarahbear, congrats on your purchases from JbEG and OWD! :appl:

Hey guys,

Want to post an update. I did finally pull the trigger on an ebay stone, a 1.31 (6.72 x 6.82 x 4.43) L SI2 OEC for half what the cushion that started this thread cost. I came across it in the last two hours before the auction ended, and I was the only bidder. I got the rings today, and the stone is a beauty! It looks really white most of the time, except in low light it looks kind of golden. The sparkle is awesome, and I am in love ::) I really like the fishtail prongs too, but I will take the main stone out and put it into a custom-made pendant. Once that is done, I'll probably post in SMTB.

Also, I have all the original receipts and appraisals for it, and it was bought at Carroll's Fine Jewelry in Seattle. I googled the store and apparently it was a really nice place that opened in 1895 (and closed in 2008). It's awesome to have that bit of history, too. I'll put a nice colored stone in the setting and will probably give it to my mom.

Thanks for all the advice!

Ooh, I saw that one! Didn't the appraisal list it as I1? What do the inclusions look like?

ForteKitty - I can't see the inclusions, I'm a bad PSer! I believe the appraiser at the store gave it an L-M, I1, but there is also a report from the Northwest Gemological Laboratory, which lists it as an L SI2. So I'll go by those stats till I hear otherwise :naughty: I'll attach a pic of the diamond plot from that report.

The loupe pic you posted does look pretty clean. Pattern looks good, too. Great buy! ;)

Thanks! It is the perfect size for what I wanted, and the perfect budget. So I'm super happy

Is your ering an oec too?

Yup, I got that one from GOG (traded in my 1.11 L VVS2 AVC for it). I can see the inclusion in that one sometimes, under certain angles, but it doesn't bother me a bit. So pretty! http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/9557/
