I am still looking for a setting, but which one would you choose?

This is the Asscher with polished setting... the pictures are not great... thanks!

Hi Dale!

I''m not sure what you mean...of the two rings, neither look like matte finish to me...

In any way, of the two settings I personally prefer the one with the plain shank, but they are both lovely!

If this is your question, I have really enjoyed my switch from a polished to a matte finish on my own asscher''s setting. Here''s the thread where we were talking about it Asscher Thread

I think the asscher looks great in both settings. But they strike me as being very different style-wise. It would really be a matter of your GF''s personal taste. Does she like the antique look or a more modern look? Because the first one seems so much more detailed and antique, while the second is more modern and simple. Has she seen them?

I love the polished setting

I''m not crazy about the other, too busy, kind of takes away from the diamond

i really like the first one!

I think I understand ... you mean "textured" or "smooth polished" finish? The first setting is "textured" -- like my own e-ring in my avatar pix. I preferred that finish for Asschers and even had that finish on MY PRONGS at first. I think it contrasts nicely with a cool, clear, pool of firey Asscher.

Smooth, liquidy, polished white metal settings can "blend in" more visually with the Asscher, so it doesn't "pop" as much. Wallermama's transformation pix are a good example of this - even though I adored the clean look of polished metal on her original set -- the total look emphasises the STONE more, with matte/satin finish bands.

Not everyone likes antique-style finishes like the first ring though, so you might wanna consult a gal pal or sister or something before pulling the trigger!

Can't wait for hand pix!!!

ETA: couple more things

1) That is an AMAZING looking asscher! Is that the one you chose? Specs? Yum!

2) The 2nd setting doesn't look bad at all with the asscher, the baguette sides help break up the "solid" metal - so if she's a clean, modern-lovin gal that might be perfect for her

3 The OTHER reason i got a textured finish was that I'm kinda hard on my stuff - & I figured it would hide scratches & stuff (which would bug me on a polished surface).

The specs are FSI2! I was a bit surprised by how nice it looked..? 1.55 carats. I believe 68.7% depth and 64is Table.. I forget... I looked at 5 Asshers... roughly 7800 cost.. for the stone. How does that sound?

I personally prefer the polished setting, but the jeweler finally got me to look at the antique, nad for some reason the diamond seemed to shine more! It went in totally against antique and i seems like the one I will choose.

My gf has no idea.. and brought up the top today nonchelantly (sp) (she is in Germany-- ballet dancer).. and her exact words:

"well you know me......i''m not into flashy things......i love eccentric looking jewerly"

What do you think!?!?! Help! I will look at other settings today

her exact words: ''well you know me......i''m not into flashy things......i love eccentric looking jewerly''

The price sounds fair, pretty good actually for over 1.5 ... did he show you the grade-making inclusion under the loop. Maybe you got lucky & it''s able to be hidden by a prong or is hidden by a step cut!

Since she''s "not flashy" and loves "eccentric" ... I think that does describe the first setting more. I''d consider myself the same way & it''s similar to what I picked for myself (with my Sweetie''s blessing).

Though "not flashy" could also apply to the 2nd setting - in that it''s cleaner, less detailed, more simple.

Stuff to keep in mind: 1) will it look good on her in 5 years, 10 years, more? 2) will it fit with a wedding band (flush or space or difficult w/band at all) 3) will it be too wide with a wedding band?

Because the prices of metals keep going up, you many want to consider buying a set now. That way you can be sure the rings look right & fit right together ... and stay flattering together ... AND, you won''t pay more later. Just a thought.

Excitement! Can''t wait to see what you choose!!!!

I looked at the Loop and had to look hard to find the inclusion between the table and the 1st step.. and its not like someone will have a loop when they see the ring! I did have a preference for a large table, since the diamond looked bigger, but the squares in this stone looked so clear that I eventually gave up the table size.
I do not want to but the wedding ring now because I want her to pick that one out... that being said, I''m want to get the engagement ring right-- and I need it before August 2nd... I look at the other thread to try to get some more insight.

Here is the Antique setting-- it is unique and shined more in the store

The polished setting will looked like something like this:

I like the top one, but I''m partial to that type and it''s more what I''m looking for myself lol!

In the minority here... I like the second one. You said that she wants something eccentric and not flashy. This one is classic and not flashy. The other is flashier in my opinion-- just more blingy with the antiquey look. Niether one is eccentric. Eccentric (in a good way) for me is Lady K''s eagle claw stick pin.

I think they are both beautiful! I love both looks! If you go with the antique one, you may want to find out if they make a matching wedding band. You can''t just put anything with that setting. Who is the maker of those settings, do you know?

The top one is more eccentric though lol I think they''re both classic, the bottom is more modern. The top is old with a modern twist which makes it somewhat eccentric, but tastefully so.

I think the top one is more eccentric as well... and I am leaning towards the antique setting. My best female friend is adamantly in favor of the polished... but she has a 3ct emerald on her polished setting.. (smile)

I also went to a jeweler in SF who said he could beat the price that I was quoted, so i will meet with him next week. Is it customary for jewelers to allow you to trade in the band if the fiance doesn''t like it...? The one with the stone said no.. the one who wants to beat the price says yes... this may be the deciding factor.

Also, I created a mathematical pricing model for Asschers in the range of E-H, 1.5ct to 1.7, VVS1 to SI2, 7000K to 11,000k from downloading information about 200 stones for 3 websites... Whiteflash does not give cut results for each stone so I just use Bluenile and Diamondsonweb. Pricescope will not allow me to post, but I sent it to them for posting. It should be helpful in pricing Asschers when one heads to the store. I know it helped me. Just want to pass along any help I can, since you guys have been soooo helpful!!!

That''s very nice of you, Dale!

Do you know who makes that antique setting?

Dale, you''ve done a lovely job so far! I say go with your gut. Pick the setting you think she will like the best. I can only give you my personal preference for the settings, but this setting is for your gf who you know more than we do. Either way, this is going to be a gorgeous ring.

Good luck, can''t wait to see the pictures.

I like #1, the antique setting. The stone looks so beautiful in that setting. I just picture a ballet dancer wearing that ring as opposed to the #2 option. But then again, I don''t know your GF.

That stone is GORGEOUS. It is the most beautiful asscher.

I traded in a square emerald ring not too long ago. I had it in a setting similar to your #2 setting, but it bugged me because of those vertical metal bars right next to the center diamond.

I really like the second setting. But if she likes more elaborate designs, number one is nice too. I''m more of a plain Jane so I''d go with number two.

Friends... I nonchalantly brought the topic up with my girlfriend, (again)... and I am sure that I avoided gving the surprise away. I will meet her in Europe to propose... likely Spain or Dublin... I am trying to to show up without her knowing. As you can gess it is getting complex.

What is not complex is the setting choice. After listening to her, I am sure about the Antique setting which i will puchase on Friday. What I am not sure about is the diamond. I have seen TWO SI2 Asschers that I like. You have seen the first, the second has feather inclusions in the back.. very unnoticeable. But I need your help!

1st- FSI2 1.56 Asscher measures at 6.40x6.34x4.39, 65% table, 69% depth
2nd- GSI2 1.55 Asscher measures at 6.81X6.77x4.11, 65% table, 60.7 % depth and looks closer to a 2ct.

The G stone has an impressive size upfront, but do lose anything in depth (theoretically)? Please let me know your thoughts.. I make the decision saturday!

Thank you!
Dale

yes, get a Sarin. too shallow and too deep are equally nasty.

I am glad you are going with the antique setting. That is the one I would have chose. It is beautiful!

Hmm, of the two choices I actually prefer the first setting, just because I really dislike the little "ribs" or "bars" that flank the baguettes on the second ring. The first setting is very, very pretty. I''ve always thought of asschers as being chameleons -- they look right at home in antique style settings as well as ultra-modern ones. The main question is: is your future fiancee more of a sleek, modern, simple dresser, or more of a romantic who''s into wearing ultra-feminine things? If it''s the latter, pick the antique setting. If it''s the former, go for a simpler setting.

Dale,
From where are you purchasing the antique setting? I think it is beautiful.

Good luck on your proposal

honey

okay i have nothing to add on the setting as both are really not to my own personal taste, but WOW that looks like one amazing asscher. whichever one that one is in your two choices, i vote for that one!

I am leaning to the other Asscher that I saw in San Diego.. I love the size... I have requested the Sarin, but the San Diego guy has never had to do one, and I decided not to push it. I guess what matters in how it looks.. So I am going to look at the first Asscher (the one photograhed above) on Friday, and then fly down to San Diego again Saturday morning to look at the second. I will post photos of both on Saturday evening (hopefully)... to get your opinions... I wil make the purchase on Monday morning....!

I am buying the setting from the San Francisco Jewelry Mart... I''m not sure how much information I can give on this forum, but the guy is really helpful, and I would be willing to share his information if anyone is in the area, and looking for diamonds... He was the one that suggested the setting, whcich I was completely against when I walked into the store.

Dale

I also would go with the antique setting... I love the engraving!

Good Luck!
