Hi all,
I originally had this setup in mind: https://www.harrywinston.com/en/classic-winston™-pear-shaped-engagement-ring-tapered-baguette-side-stones. SO and myself fell in love with it (this one and pear side stones) as I shared in a separate thread.

I bought this pear: https://www.rarecarat.com/product/80189647 (we felt like 3ct was a bit too big at HW so I've decided to go for something around 2 and a nice 1.6 lw ratio with slightly lower depth which makes it look a bit longer to me).

Recently, I stumbled upon this setup which I absolutely love:

One has pear+princess and the other pear+emerald. The first one apparently has 3ct on the pear (the shape is a bit fat so probably a lower L/W ratio than mine, 2ct on the princess - not sure about the dimension but it looks great). The second one is irrealistic given the size but I'm still wondering if an emerald would make sense with a much smaller pear.
My questions are:
  1. Do you think that I could achieve a similar esthetic with the pear I bought along with a 2ct emerald or princess?
  2. Given the color of my current diamond, is an F shade okay if the two stones are right next to each other on the ring? I've read that more that 1 shade of difference is noticeable even within the colorless range - which might make E be the lowest I can go for.
  3. I'm trying to save as much as possible on the various variables as this second stone was not part of my original budget so:
    1. Is a medium fluorescence really bad for a colorless diamond? (I've read everything and its opposite)
    2. It looks like the size & color are fixed variables if I want this setup and I want a great cut because I've noticed that it's the best variable to optimize for - so as a result, what clarity is "okay" to go with without impacting the esthetic of the diamond for non-experts?
  4. I've read mostly about the pitfalls to watch out for in pear-shaped diamonds but if anyone has good recommendations for emeralds and princess cuts - it'd be very very welcome!

oh nice! looks like you acquired a really phenomenal pear!! its a beauty with no bowtie that i'm able to discern from the video. well done!!

as far as color goes i'd imagine you'd be perfectly fine if you stayed within the colorless range with the moi et toi style ring, right next to each other. BUT to be safe i might stay with e color next to your d color pear, though. that's likely what i would do if i were in your situation.

Ive learned that fluorescence in colorless diamonds is not a negative as long as it does not render the appearance of the diamond milky/hazy/oily. however, it is personal preference to avoid it or not.

its difficult to say if a 2 carat emerald or 2 carat princess would be a good match for your 2 carat pear, as each cut/make faces up differently. I'd pay attention to the millimeter measurement when you are shopping for your partner stone. As your pear, most pears, face up generously in comparison to other cuts of the same carat weight. I sense you might need to be shopping at the larger than 2 carat weight for your partner stone to the pear. As pears face up so generously...could be 2.5+ for the emerald or princess.

which are you favoring more for your moi et toi?? emerald or princess??

Thank you very much for the information! I preferred the emerald cut, the princess feels too similar in the way it reflects the light to me and I love the contrast.

I tried sketching a similar toi&moi setup with the emerald cut - it looks like having the emerald be ~70% in height works best in term of proportions. Adding a picture here with the proportions and angle I liked the best.

Agree that the emerald will look better than the princess for visual contrast. I like the proportions you’ve picked!

I think you can easily go with a G (one color step down but still very white)

    1. Is a medium fluorescence really bad for a colorless diamond? (I've read everything and its opposite) We mostly worry about Strong Fluor. Med shouldnt be a problem but each stone should be evaluated to make sure its not.
    2. It looks like the size & color are fixed variables if I want this setup and I want a great cut because I've noticed that it's the best variable to optimize for - so as a result, what clarity is "okay" to go with without impacting the esthetic of the diamond for non-experts? We usually go a little bit higher in Emerald cuts because its easier to see flaws in them.
  4. I've read mostly about the pitfalls to watch out for in pear-shaped diamonds but if anyone has good recommendations for emeralds and princess cuts - it'd be very very welcome! Did you work out the length you need? 70% of your pear length would be about 8mm. I second an emerald cut. I find the brilliant cut of the pear contrasted with the step cuts of the emerald cut very interesting to the eye.

Great choice for the emerald. I love emeralds!! Have you decided a ratio of emerald you favor?? the longer thinner variety or the squatter fatter ones??

Thats a very helpful image to work from in terms of proportion and relation to the pear. From there you can reverse engineer to determine the carat weight in which to shop. Doing a mock up of the exact measurement of your pear to the emerald out of...say construction paper or thicker card stock paper might be helpful... just so you can see and feel instead of just digital.

Many expert professionals believe that going to si1 or even si2 is alright, provided the stone is eye clean. Numerous members here that wear an emerald cut diamond are frequently si1 or less frequently si2 clarity. Each stone must be evaluated individually. Although, i have seen some eye "unclean" vs2. Conservatively and in general vs1 offers mind clean assurance

Good Luck in your search!
