I'm experiencing what I suspect is mask rage, encounters with people incensed by my wearing a mask outdoors. Both times I didn't take it off as I was mere steps from being inside so why handle my mask unnecessarily.

The first on Friday as I was walking down the street. Passed a young man in a wheelchair who mockingly called me a "mask nazi". The second last night as I was walking through a near-empty parking lot. A guy in a truck sped at me, I tried to dodge out of the way and he swerved right at me. He did this several times until I screamed and then laughed and sped off. Did not get his license plate number. It was so awful. I suspect it was mask related.

Dear God. I don't understand people at all. You wearing a mask effects them 0. For the driver did the parking lot happen to have any cameras? I know some do? If it did maybe you could report the time to the store and see if there's a way a camera caught their plate while they were trying to run you over?

I'm so sorry people are crappy :(

Holy crap! People are very odd, and I sincerely think it will just get even more so. Masks should have never been politicized, Our health and wellbeing shouldn't be either but.....

I'm glad you're OK Be careful over the next few days. its more than just mask rage I'm thinking.

These F-ed up people know they're wrong.
In their sick minds their shame and guilt gets converted into anger at others who are doing the right thing.

It's so tragic that there are so many of these F-ed up people in America now.
We have a sick country desperately in need of healing.
I hope healing will begin the day after tomorrow.

I have to repeat this because I think it's an excellent idea. The driver is a menace and may do it again to someone else.

That is horrifying! I'm so sorry that happened to you.

These types of people have deep mental issues that run much deeper than face mask rage! I had a client come to my door last week who was not wearing a mask & when I went outside to collect his dog for grooming,he looked at my mask & said "what ever is the matter with you people!!!!" He gave me the filthiest glare.

Lol, yikes! How about the loonies who think it is *their* place to berate and verbally assault others who choose to not wear a mask! Um, keep moving, either way, it's not your business if someone wears a mask or doesn't wear one!

I'm sorry you had to go through this! How awful!

I wear my mask to protect YOU,you wear a mask to protect ME.It IS my business if you do not wear a mask when dropping your dog off for grooming, especially since I have a sign in the window "Please wear a mask thank you" My DH has severe COPD & cannot afford to contract covid 19

I’m not about to give up my mask, and how frightening for you.

I’m also not going to leave my house for the next few months, as I’m going to need double knee replacement hopefully in early December, so I don’t want to catch Covid and have that get messed up.

I’ve been afraid of what you have described, so I’ve been limiting where I go, and I’ve been getting in and out as fast as I can.

My sister in NorCal has experienced one incident much less than yours so she and I have discussed our plans (which is completely ridiculous that we have to do this). My main goal is to not get in a position where an anti masker talks to me, or god forbid starts shouting and their spit starts flying.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. Dude in the wheelchair is vulnerable and it’s getting worse as the temps drop, so he is really really acting against his own best interest.

I seriously don’t know (well I do know but we can’t discuss it) how it became republicans don’t wear masks and dems do. It’s so crazy.

You wear a mask to safeguard the people around you. So it is certainly my business when others fail to take their responsibility to safeguard me and mine seriously, if I’m one of the people around them!

Thank you for wearing a mask @rockhoundofficiando. And I think you’re well within your rights as part of a nominally-civilized society to demand the same courtesy of others. I will certainly continue to do so - but up here the vast majority of people are doing their part to try to squash this thing.

@Begonia That is frightening...I’m so sorry that happened to you. At my house in Maryland there are more people walking about because it’s a small city. I can easily dodge people now that the warm weather is pretty much over. During the summer I felt like a ping pong ball darting into the street to avoid walking close to someone who wasn’t wearing a mask. It was especially frustrating when my 94 year old mother was on the sidewalk and couldn’t get out of their way fast enough. I think the world is getting crazy..Hugs to you..

Good grief. That is beyond the pale

I’d have been awfully tempted to take the mask off and fake a sneeze at the Witless Wheelchair Wonder. I’d have resisted - only because that’ll get you in real hot water up here.

The truck travesty. I have no words. I’m so sorry you encountered this loon and I hope you never do again, and I hope his perversions pay off in like kind and quality :angryfire: I guess the only thing to do these days is whip out a phone and start filming?

Lol, what a surprise! How dare someone negatively comment to *you* about your choosing to wear a mask yet you feel ENTITLED to negatively comment on *others'* choices. Typical! Lololol stahhpppp, walk the other way, everyone doesn't have to agree with you. Lol.
Ps personally, I wear a mask, I think it's prudent.

You started it. The thread was about a poster’s experience with harassment and you made it all about your agenda.

A classic example of trying to derail a conversation with whataboutism

HI:

I have no words--the truck incident is especially horrifying. I am glad you are safe Begonia, but that must have rattled you.

@kenny not that it matters, but Begonia is Canadian.

kind regards--Sharon

There was an anti mask rally in Toronto yesterday. I found some disheartening graffiti about a propaganda video while on my run this morning.

Early in the pandemic the police had to kill an anti masker because he tried to run over a grocery store employee and then shot at police.

Extremism is everywhere to some extent. Unfortunately current events are throwing fuel on the fire.

I think many people are in a bad mood. Understanding given the circumstances but it’s not healthy to get it out like that.

I’m sorry @Begonia i can only imagine how unpleasant that encounter with the young man in the wheelchair was. And fwiw the word Nazi upsets me when used like that. Not you writing it explaining what happened but the man saying it to you. Until one has walked in one’s shoes and all that.

As for the truck encounter that is criminal and that person belongs in jail. I’m so sorry you experienced that abuse and I hope he messes with the wrong person next. That’s all I’ll say about that but you get what I mean.

Moving forward all you can do is avoid and ignore people who behave, imo, as if their IQs are in below 80 range.

There is NO excuse for that kind of behavior.

Jeez, what‘s wrong with people? What an awful experience. We’ve now been forced in to a second lockdown because of people not social distancing, or wearing their masks.

Some feel if you aren’t extreme ie you’re a moderate you’re the problem. It’s horrifying. I’ll be who I am and too bad if some don’t like it. I’m intolerant of intolerance on all sides. And I’m not a fan of extremism. But I’m way more tolerant than the extremists as far as I see it.

If you’re sure you’ll be safe then yes. This might be one way to handle the situation. Given the circumstances @Begonia went through the best thing she could do was get out of his way and get somewhere safe. But how pleasing it would have been to have him put in jail where he clearly belongs.

Exactly.

Personally I don’t see that. I see both Democrats and Republicans wearing masks and those not wearing masks. I don’t have statistics but just going by my personal experience. We’re out almost daily and I see both parties doing both.

I'm SO sorry that I want to protect my DH from contracting covid 19. He is 70 years old & on oxygen at home.Perhaps I should invite all the non-mask wearing public to visit my business! If you wear a mask youself, what is your problem? :???: I run a business,& here in the UK it is the LAW to wear a mask when entering a shop.

@missy I agree with everything you said. My son David has an IQ lower than 80 and he knows to put his mask on...and why he has to.

Yes! I didn’t mean to insult those with intellectual disabilities Joanne. I know you know that but I want to apologize for being insensitive. I can only think that some of the people who stubbornly put others at risk must have some mental challenges/issues. Your son is much wiser than these mask challenged individuals aka mask holes. :/

I agree...what we are seeing highlighted in the news is the worst of behaviors on both sides which sadly just deepens the divide we have.

It troubles me to see/read this (I have encountered the same once while walking my dog). No matter what side you are on, it seems hypocritical that people who see mask mandates as a violation of personal freedom condemning those who are using that same freedom to exercise the right to wear one.
