Marquise Help.

I've been shopping around recently and found this awesome forum and search tools. I've been looking for a perfect cut marquise diamond but reading this forum, I've learned that I need to look at the actual diamond to look for bow ties/dark spots. Without having seen this particular diamond, I was wondering if you guys can help me to see if I'm looking for the right "specs".

Well I few things I would say.


For cuts like that I would stay G or above. The color gets stronger in these types of cuts, so itll show a lot more color than say, a round might. I had an H pear personally and at times, it looked dingy. (And that's coming from a girl who wears a k round now and loves it!).

And for marquise even though you don't have as much choice because the selection is smaller, if you could find one with lower clarity, I'd go with that. That cut hides a lot, so you can get away with a lower clarity without seeing it. And that way you do t have to pay for it. Like I said though, with fancy cuts its a little harder to be choosy, so this is easier said than done.


Also like you said, we cannot judge it without a picture. And then the last thing, is that the ratio you like in a marquise? Because not all marquise look the same.

Plus you left out one thing...price . What's your budget for thus baby?

You need to work with a vendor that has pictures of the stones. The specs for fancy cuts don't give
us the whole picture. James Allen would be a good vendor.

The other option is to work with a trusted vendor to bring in a few stones to look at. Good old
Gold would be a good vendor for that.

I love the pudgyness going on (love me a chubby marquise) but holy heck!! That's not a girdle, it's a snowsuit!! I'd also be worried about chipping the table on the corner...

hmmm.... well hopefully whoever gets it is a PSer so i can see where how its set. Its hard to say i dont know where you'd get to see a lot of marquise to try on... they arent that popular these days so i dont know a place that would have a whole lot of them preset... but even just in my local (non mall) jewelry shops, they always have a few, even if they are just CZ in a nice setting.

well whatever his budget i bet he can get her something nice, thats the beautify of a marquise. look at this 1 ct D for under 4k! Not saying this is "the one but shoot. If you can get away with a si1 with this type of cut you'll get quite a bargain

this is very true. The only reason i have neglected to bring it up is because i have been doing some searching on the second hand market and, though i could just be bad at it, i havent found a marquise there. They are either sliver thin marquise or clarity enhanced, or ones with large bowties, or very port clarity and color.... in theory they should be easy ti find, and to an extent they are, but its hard to find one of quality for a second hand price.

Kenny, I hear you, but with second hand and estate sales, many times you are not getting a Gia report. How important is that?

that i am not sure of. I know they have a showroom, but ive head conflicting things as to if you can see them or not. Of course, you can always ask their online reps

OP here, Thanks guys for your quick responses. My budget is around 8-9k. ratio I would prefer something 1.9-2.2ish. The diamonds are mainly at Solomon Brothers/b2c/etc (not at james allen). So no pictures of the stones until I get a reply back from their companies. Those are pretty legit companies right? Outside of bowties and girdle thickness is there anything else I should be looking for?

Kenny, I hear you, but with second hand and estate sales, many times you are not getting a Gia report. How important is that?

It's very important.
I'd talk to the seller and state the sale is contingent on your approval of the GIA report and the stone will have to be removed from the setting if it does not already have a GIA or AGS report.
If they balk, say bye bye.

If you are in a hurry and don't want to hassle with all this and the other risks of a private sale buy a new marquise.

If you are in no hurry and your priority is the most bling for the buck I think the marquise cut in the used market is just a huge bargain waiting to be enjoyed.

I think that the stone Niel posted looked better. Had tons of sparkle!

now i dont usually think a marquise this low looks good, but the color looks evenly distributed and the stone still looks bright, so it might be worth having them look at, though that F is my favorite, i know its out of budget and a little chubbier than you like.

BUT! i laughed so hard when i opened this up because it has an appraisal listed. I didnt read it until i zoomed in to the description...
I said to myself "this appraisal looks so familiar, just like the place I got my pear setting....must be a common form.
then i saw the persons name is listed, and i was like "oh that person is in my area!! must be common in michigan...."
then i saw the top of the form. it WAS the EXACT same place I got my pear set!!


what are the chances....

either way, my point is, if they can get better pictures, I know at least thats a real appraisal im familiar with and have purchased from that B&M store

Dang, I didn't know finding a nice marquise would be this hard to find. I wouldn't mind getting F if only it was so stubby. With the I, I can tell the color difference right off the bat (normally i can't with most H's). I guess I'll have to do more research, keep asking, and wait for "the one". =T
