So I think it comes down to these two diamonds and I would love to hear your opinions on what you think as far as brilliance and visual performance goes. Besides the obvious difference in L/W (1.72 vs 1.92) and color (D vs G), I''m debating b/w the two stones below and am not sure which one to go with. They''re both beautiful marquise and bowtie is minimal on both. They''re both eye clean as far as inclusions go. Both have 8 main pav facets and are equally brilliant. But which one''s better?

Stone #1:
Carat: 1.72
Color: D
Clarity: Si1
Depth: Sarin 62.4% GIA 62.3%
Table: Sarin 53.6% GIA 55%

L/W: 1.78
Pav Depth: 43.9%
Pav Angle: 46 (33.9-41)
Crown Height: 14.6%
Crown Angle: 34.5 (33.9-34.9)
Girdle: 1.75%-3.77%

Stone #2:
Carat: 1.59
Color: G
Clarity: Si1
Depth: Sarin 62.6% GIA 62.5%
Table: Sarin 55.4% GIA 55%

Wow, tough choice! I think I''d go with the smaller/thinner G and save yourself some cash. I prefer the L:W ratio on that one, and it looks almost as large as the 1.72. But it''s really down to personal preference at this point.

ya, tough choice. Both look equally good to me, no preference.

I love them both. Can you look at them in person? Is the price difference important to you--does it make it easier to choose?

I think both are gorgeous but if I had to choose it would be 1.59 G bc i prefer the shape and it looks just as large as the bigger D

I love marquise and I would choose the 1.59 for me, the other is showing what appears to be a bow tie, if WF says both show minimal bow ties then fine but it wouldn't hurt just to clarify.

I like the shape on the G better...it would be my choice!

They are incredibly close - too beautiful to pick one. Since the stones are with WF, I''d request their expert opinion on why they would pick one over the other.

Thanks for all your responses so far. Its a very difficult decision. To provide a few more details, the D costs $700 more than the G. I was actually able to see the G in person, it was a beautiful stone. Face up, it was as big as a 1.71ct stone that had a deeper cut to it. I found very minimal to no bowtie on the G and looking at the pics of the two side by side, seems like the D has a slightly bigger bowtie. The D was one that WF found after an exhaustive search and so I haven''t had the chance to see it in person. The biggest difference here is of course the L/W ratio with the G being closer to 2:1. I spoke to WF and they mentioned that the D had slightly more brilliance than the G and that both had a very minimal bowtie. I asked them which one had a smaller visible bowtie, but they were unable to choose one over the other.

So which one''s the winner? Need to hear from more of you. =)

Do you have a preference for a fatter or slightly skinner marquise? The depth are actually very close with 62.3% and 62.5% respectively so I doubt it is visible to the naked eye. The physical measurements of both are also extremely close with one slightly longer and the other slightly fatter.

I definitely prefer the G, but I will be interested to see what you decide!

I would go with the G ... i love the shape of it.

I think I prefer the L/W ratio of the G over the D. But the D is a D, which makes it nice as well although a G is still near colorless. The ASET on the D shows a black diamond (pavillion?) and that might affect the light return of the stone. I also noticed that the D is slightly lopsided, seems asymmetrical.

Both really top stones - I would go with the one they say has the thickest safest girdle tips

HI:

Good point.

Altho the color D is very desirable, I really prefer the long skinny shape for marquise. Hence the G would be my choice. Do you prefer one shape over the other?

cheers--Sharon

G: slightly thick -very thick
D: med-slightly thick

Thanks for pointing that out.

I think I prefer the G over the D due to the 1.95 L/W over the 1.78.

They are both beautiful..... what''s not to like?

Aside from the detailed information, and going on shape alone, I like the G for its elegant shape.

insufficient info - only somone looking at both can make the judgement - there is variation and the med to slightly thick may be thicker at the tips - the main place where many marquise are broken.

I like the G.

The G for me. Looks like the bow tie is minimal, and the shape of it is preferable to me. Plus, the cost savings makes it attractive, but taking that away, and I''d still vote the G.

Since I''m leaning towards the G and the fact that its graded at slightly thick, can I assume that the tips couldn''t be any thinner than ''slightly thick''. According to the Sarin, girdle varied from 0.14-0.42mm. Should I still be concerned here and ask specifically for the thickness?

I too wd have picked the G for its more pleasant proportions.
Based on the ASET I don''t think you shd worry about the girdle thickness. Durability is not likely to be an issue either.

I hope not, chipping a marquise would be devastating.

Indeed. Have your ring insured.
