Hey guys I'm new to this forum and am interested in some opinions on the marquise cut. I have always liked this cut and am currently looking for something for an E ring.

Ideally high cut and 2-2.5 carat.

I'm interested in people's opinions. On color and clarity.

I personally would like a d-g color but would compromise slightly for a better clarity... (si1 ) provided it is eye clear.

Any thoughts options would be great.

Oh it's to be set in yellow gold band with platinum/ white gold claw . And I am not sure if the diamond against a gold band will allow greater color to be noted ....?

I am also keen to see some simple solitaire designs ... I have seen some designs I like But unsure how to describe the setting... So looking for options...

Marquise hold inclusions better than other stones, so often times a si1 would be eye clean, meaning you cant see the inclusions. Also, it could be easier to find an eye clean si 2 as well.

If you are buying a normal modern marquise, i agree G is probably as low as you would want to go( and id try and stay D-E). They show more color that a round, and the faceting pattern really looks best and most crisp in higher colors. Though, if you could manage to find an antique cut marquise, id consider dropping a few shades, a those dont show as much color, and are lovely.

plain solitiare sounds lovely! And as crazy as it sounds i think a yellow gold marquise cut is going to be very "in" in a few years, so i think your on the front of that ;)

as for a way to make it look a bit more interesting, take a look at the head of this ring i love how the prongs intertwine to make an interesting, yet simple head. I think there are a handful of benches that could make a setting like that for you with a more plain yellow gold shank.

Waht you will also want to consider is the shape of your marquise. Do you like them normal, long, or chubby? Also, whats you budget for the whole thing?

Hi Aaron,
Welcome to PS.
I thik it's important to clarify something: If you went online and asked a general question...."What flavor ice cream is best?"Imagine the responses- and also what they would mean to you, as a potential ice cream buyer.
Of course the answer is that what difference does it make if 100 people like chocolate, if you don't.

When it comes to diamonds in general- and marquises in particular, there's a lot of different flavors- and as many ideas about which is best as there are people who look at them.
For example, as Niel asked- what shape do you like- long and lean, or "full figured"

When it comes to color and clarity, there's a wide range of prices based on these aspects- and gain, a wide range of demographics of buyers.
Some prefer higher color, smaller. Others buy lower color, and larger.
When speaking to buyers, I always try to figure out what will best serve them.
For example: If a person is 60, they have a lot less ability to see a small inclusion- and also may have much greater desire for as large a stone as possible- compared to someone who's 25

Niel also asked about budget- and that's a large component in decision making as well.

Have you looked at a lot of stones in person?

Hey guys thank you soo much for your information. I am keen to find a diamond that is " normal" marquise cut if anything very slightly towards the longer if anything. But I like an even proportioned marquise.

Neil I really like that setting and have been looking for something like this for a long time... So thank you . I am wondering if there is a way to see how this would look in yellow gold with the setting in platinum.

I have viewed a few stones and I tend to only see " obvious inclusions " however I notice color particularly well as I often color match things in my work.

I am looking 15- 20 k in the price range and I am leaning towards a e-f color approx 2 carat and as I said earlier the diamond hopefully eye clean and even proportion.

I would love to get some ideas on some one to make up something similar to that which Neil posted.

Most of all the diamond must have fire and sparkle .

This will be for an e ring ... I have an eye for detail but can be pursueded on clarity if the inclusions are eye clean.

Does anyone know some one able to produce this type of ring etc ..?

Once again thank you for your help.

There are many vendors that could help you with that. I'd work with GOG (Good Old Gold) personally, they have a great eye for fancy cuts. Provide videos and ASET images (which is how you confirm light performance) :read: . And carry a nice selection of settings.

Plus their customer service is very good.

I'd call and ask them to source you the best diamond, with minimal bowtie. G or better and eyeclean. You don't need to stay above F. You can easily go down to G.

Quick question - how does the recipient of the ring feel about marquise stones?

Some people are only happy with rounds, so it's best to be sure you know how she feels about this specific shape (particularly for the ring she will wear for the rest of her life), before making the purchase.

Thanks rocky raccoon and gypsy.

We have looked at a lot of stones and rings and I have got a feel for her ideas on the ring and she really likes the look hence why I'm looking down this path. .

Do gog do custom items .?

I like the idea of seeing the photos and videos of the ring prior to purchase.

Yes they do custom. :-) :wavey:
