My mom has always dreamed of a marquise shaped Emerald for a center stone in her e-ring upgrade. She has been wearing my grandmother''s poorly cut pear for 20 years and my dad has decided to surprise her with a new ring

. Anyway, Bill Pearlman sent me a couple to look at. They are absolutely gorgeous. We''re going to use the bigger one, which is around .75 cts. in the setting and maybe use the smaller one in a pendant or a sidestone. Here is the picture of a stuller setting my mom likes. She is a YG gal all the way. If you all have any other ideas I would love it. I want it to look like an e-ring and not a cocktail ring which in one of the reasons we''re not going any bigger for the marquise. my mom wears a 5 1/4.

What a fun project you are doing for your mom mrssalvo. The emerald is just gorgeous, it''s got a lovely color to it. Yummm.

thanks kaleigh. i was also very bad and ordered a pair of YG earings from Bill''s Daily Special''s Section to give my mom for Christmas..I''ll start a thread for those over in SMTR. This is such a fun project...

Long marquise!

Feel free to tell your mother her ring has an admirer here already.

Not long ago I came across some pretty 'bypass' marq settings - pave and not. Very sculptural and flattering on the hand. I tried on the colored ones - not the pave.

A small one:

And some large:

thanks ana, those are cool..is there any way you could paint the marquise on the stuller i posted

here''s another one I found and I like the v-tips..

That''s pretty cool, I like v tips on a marquise better than prongs. Will she wear a wedding band with this ring?? Or is it going to be an all in one type ring???

i guess it will depend on the setting. her current set is soldered together so she''d be fine with a solo ring like the ones i posted..

Hm... it doesn''t fit even in picture. I am afraid that the very long shape of the marquise will need something made custom.

I have not looked up Stuller''s database, but I''d bet that setting is preset because it needs a very small marquise of certain L/W to fit in there.

I could probably draw something similar though.

One thing about the setting is that it elongates the face of the ring even more - judging from how the stone looks on your finger, adding diamonds around the tips will bring the ring to cover the finger almost all the way to the knuckle.

Would you hate two rows of small, channel-set diamonds instead of the prong set fringes in the Stuller model?

thanks ana for trying

I emailed bill the links so we''ll see if the stuller settings would even work...

It should have worked better...

Wow.....those are both beautiful emeralds!

Do you think she''d like an E/W set ring? If it were for me, I''d probably want to use the shorter fatter stone in a ring, mounted EW, and then use that neato long stone for a stunning pendant....

What a fun project!!!!

Oh ana, That looks incredible...I really like it, you''re amazing. i''m going to show this thread to my sister later tonight and see what she thinks...

I like that setting with the pears on the sides! That was the original design for my ering! That setting with the pears gives width to that long Marquise. The first setting appears to elongate it more and I don''t think flatters it.
I like the fatter Marquise in the first setting. JMHO

I found this on the stuller website that look very similar to the mock up ana did. hopefully we can somehow get the stone to fit in a stuller setting..what do you guys think?

Oh, I love that stone! It is gorgeous! I know you probably don''t want a custom job, but this would look great in YG...even though this MQ stone is fatter...

I like the smaller emerald myself. The bypass settings really accentuate the marquise shape.

I don't know how much this setting could be modified, but for a longer marq, the rows of diamonds would fall short. I am pretty sure your jeweler can clarify off the bat.

Non-custom options will have to leave room for different proportions of center stone - so it could not be a by-pass design. Something with side stones should do because there is no restriction of how much the tips can stretch out of the setting. Also, three-stone designs should accommodate the modified head holding the long diamond.

However, the long marquise may pose other problems: it will need a protective setting and most off the rack ones are high (so that the head can hold both small and large stones even if it doesn't fit them well) and lightweight - quite the opposite. This can't be always true though - you should be able to find the right one.

The small marquise has more common proportions, but then... the resulting ring will be allot less impressive IMO. And it would be an unusual choice if you already have both stones to choose from.

i agree the smaller one is a bit fatter, but it is also a lot smaller

.

i''m going to ship the stones back to Bill tomorrow and he''s going to let me know what we can do about the settings..Hopefully we''ll be able to work something out. My personal favorite is the marquise up above with the pear sides. I think it would be a very classic look so if we can do that one, it would be great. If something custom is the only option, then we may have to postpone the project for a few months..

Hey MrsSalvo....I just found a picture of my marquise sapphire RHR (a present from my mom after I had my daughter) that may be an option for your mom''s emerald. I know a woman that has my exact ring as her engagement ring except she has a diamond marquise in the center. This setting may work better with the smaller emerald you posted. I have occassionally worn this as an e-ring with my plain white gold band. The neat thing about the ring is that the marquise is suspended or kind of floats over the bridge of baguettes. I think the sapphire in my setting is only like 1/3ct or so. I''m sorry I don''t have a gallery pic of it.

If you don''t like this one, then I like the marquise with the pear side stones best.

thanks peebles for the picture. I''ve been thinking about this some more this weekend and i''m wondering if maybe i should just put it in a traditional solitaire and then add a diamond wedding band...I hope to talk to Bill today to see what my options are..
