Hehehe I actually have to say I was completely creeped out by the Vatche 'throne' thing...god complex anyone?
Personally I can't see paying a premium for any brand name that is that high...hence why instead of getting a Michael B setting, we had something similar made with almost double the ctw of stones for $400 less than the cheapest MB quote I got. My platinum ring is very well made and we were really happy with the quality of work. I'm a huge custom fan and would go custom every time if it meant that I didn't have to pay exhorbitant markups for someone's reproduced design.
It's along the same lines as something like software. I understand that to create something like a ring could be considered a piece of art, and the markup for the designer actually doing the work himself may make sense, just like when you put thousands of hours of work into creating and perfecting a software package. but once there's a template model for future production AND a team in place to assist with that production, I don't think prices should be higher for the same thing to be made over and over. I don't agree with paying Adobe $2k for a software suite...I'd rather get it on eBay.
Luckily I have a friend at Adobe and I can get a legit copy straight from the manuf. for $75...but I digress.
I'd pay more for a custom job that only I or a few others had...but not the same price for the same ring that thousands of other people have. My take on it.
