i think it is almost impossible to get a decent mango outside of where they are grown. they must be picked unripe for shipment and after shipping long distances in who knows what containers at who knows what temperatures, i''m doubtful of being able to get a good one. even when i buy them here in california they seem ''off'' even after if let them ripen on the counter. however, the ones i had in mexico last summer i couldn''t get enough of.

That is the problem. Most storebought mangos here truly are awful. I don''t blame you Ellen for not being impressed.

When you have a GOOD mango (the kind that smells like mango and not like wax), it''s out of this world.

I can''t believe you hadn''t tried mango until this point!

Southern IN...google it, I bet you''ll find all the details!

I just tried a mango for the first time at Gypsy''s house and really liked it. I remember her saying it was a certain type but can''t remember what she said. Hopefully she will chime in.

Ellen, did you get the large green/red mangos? Those are weird. I don't like them at all. But maybe you want to try another type that looks like the picture I attached with this reply. They are a lot more smaller and skinnier and taste much much much better. http://www.simply-thai.com/fruit/yellow-mango.jpg
yep, the flat ones i buy from asian market taste much better.

the best tasting fruit ??? LYCHEE !!

Yeah, get the flat yellow ones. There''s no need to peel it like an apple. Just cut both sides close to the seed, then cut horizontal and vertical lines on the flesh on each side, then you can scoop out the flesh with a spoon. For the flesh around the seed, just peel off the strip of skin and bite away.

And, I lurvvvve persimmons.

Well, your account doesn''t give me much hope, but I''ll still try to find the other kind. If not, I may just have to take a lil trip south. I can just see hubby now. Me: Sweety, we need to take a trip back to Mexico. Him: Why? Me: Mangoes!!

My favorite mangoes come from my grandmother''s tree in FL. Soooo good, and HUGE! Must be ripened, where they are almost soft to the touch, but not blackened.

I also love them green with salt. Yum!

I grew up with them and adore them. They are one of my favorite fruits. Period. You crack me up ellen. Try the mexican mangoes... or are they asian mangoes. They are smaller flat, go only to from green (unripe) to yellow (ripe) and have a sweeter taste. Tacori, I'm glad you liked them!

for Australians, they're part of summer culture - something all aussies can relate to.

here's one of my all time favorite poems - Mango Weather by Thomas Shapcott. it's a snapshot into australian culture and lifestyle. nb the layout is different in the original, but is justified automatically by this interface. my apologies to Mr Shapcott!

Mango Weather

January and mango weather
mosquito sunsets full-moon broodiness
nights barefoot without coolness
mildew nights
evenings sodden with meals and kitchen stillness
mango stillness shouldering crowding us
we chafe we are restless we are
the sudden
clobber
of fruit on iron roof
mangoes stinging to juice
in the sweat globules of moonlight.

Or buckets of mangoes for neighbours
we are neighbourhood children slippery-mouthed
picking mango fibres from teeth
suburban we are stewed mangoes in ‘fridges
mango chutney on shelf after shelf
mangoes underfoot mangoes bumping littering
we feel the blackening fruit burst
slide underfoot
lumpy seeds skid out with a wet chuckle.

night smells mildew wiping our fingertips
fruit-bats with mango-seed bodies gorged on pulp
mangoes hanging rancid
January rancid as fruit-bat stench
humid as brush-turkey mounds
mango trees know already summer claims everything
in our backyards they are everywhere
menstrual
scalding abundance.

Then one morning done, finished.
no more dropping no rotting in gutters
no slopping no littering no more
buzzing with flies on the compost.
Remnants
the few stale mangoes like dried blood
scabby seeds on the grass
disavowed foreign
black skin shrivelled
like wrists of a mummy.

Thomas Shapcott

Ripe mangoes do not have a medicinal taste at all. OR at least they shouldn''t
I''ve been eating them all my life--my parents served them to me as baby food. There are many different kinds, here in the US I''ve only seen the green kind that get rosy on one side and the smaller kind that gets completely yellow.
they should be soft and yielding to the touch all over when ready to eat and should smell ripe.
the only issue with them is that you get strings between your teeth sometimes and that they are hard to divide in half because of the big seed, but they taste truly wonderful. they are by far my favorite fruit. I even eat the skin a lot of the time (but most people don''t)

Thankies mam!

Gypsy, yes, I need to find the yellow ones. I just hit up the best grocery store we have, as far as variety goes, but they only had the other kind.

whit, wow, what a poem! Felt like I was right there, mushing around in mangoes and swatting flies!

Really was good.

BJ, mine was definitely ripe, I even had juice running down my hand. I think part of it''s just "my" taste buds. Kinda like me and green peppers. To me, they''re just bitter and repulsive, others don''t find them that way at all.

The best mango I had was while I was in Australia. I was walking by a little market and the amazing scent of fresh mango stopped me dead in my tracks. I bought a couple and they were to die for. I have not found mangos in the US (any variety) that compares and I''ve eaten a lot of mango in my lifetime.
