man-made colored diamonds?

I was surprised to learn today that man-made colored diamonds could easily be as large as half a carat. Even a carat, it sounded like.

This might be an alien thing to say, but other than the fact that natural diamonds are rarer and have a more exciting provenance, would a man-made diamond also be of lower quality?
