I don't understand why people don't understand the basic concept that the feeling of "being high" is the result of brain cells over-firing and possibly dying.

The higher you are, the more brain cells are dying. Different drugs kill different cells. I WISH they were readily apparent cells like "oh, my arm no longer works, I guess I should get off drugs", but it isn't. It's cognitive function stuff.

I hope a more medically-versed PSer can chime in here, with how drugs effect brain function.

People do drugs to escape their reality.
It works ... till the drugs wear off.

Yeah, but a lot of people have a beer or smoke a joint and don't chew a guy's face off. (Edit: not saying anyone is saying that). This is terrible. I want to know the truth about what happened.

We DO know the truth.
VERY VERY VERY drugged up guy chewed the face off other guy.

What truth are you waiting for?
Are you suggesting there's some government conspiracy or UFOs involved?

I want to know exactly what drugs were in his system. We have a big meth problem here but I've never heard of this kind of attack. If meth was involved, I want to know. If LSD was involved, I want to know. If bath salts were involved, I want to know. It's easy to demonize "drugs" and I think that's all the more reason we should just get a straight up lab report from the authorities in this case.

Yes I'm sure the truth about exactly which drugs were involved will be published.

Just want to put this out there... but why. Certain drugs are well known to have hallucinogenic properties with mutilation (self or other) being well documented (during the high and years later). Regardless of which drug it was, KNOWING the exact one in this case will not change the fact that the others can have the same outcome, nor change the mind of those already doing them (or may do them in the future.)

the guy was high, out of his mind, and chewed off a man's face.

Let's just be happy it wasn't a zombie. That would REALLY scare me. :errrr:

Do you guys remember the horror story of the guy that attacked a sleeping young man on a bus somewhere north (i want to say canada but i'm not sure?). I remember it being an unprovoked attack half way in to the bus ride. It gave me nightmares when I heard about it.

Yup, that was Canada - just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The case was all over the news again recently because the guy is up for parole or escorted day trips... It just adds to my list of phobias and gives me more reason to avoid taking Greyhound busses.

I thought attack of the zombies and Walking Dead too ( I can't watch that show in the dark :errrr: ).... This is just horrifyingly gross :knockout:

It's scary how people manage to "discover" things to get high on. The latest thing I heard is people getting drunk on hand sanitizer

OMG, the pictures are truly horrifying  :errrr: I couldn't visualize the extent of the damage with the first 2 links...just thought a few scrapes or patches...but HOLY **** it's down to the bones!!!! The contrast between the facial hair and the eye socket is truly terrifying. I wonder if the the victim was beaten unconscious first or just comatose from drugs...I really hope he was not conscious when the offender started chewing on his face. Poor man.

Definitely Canada. He chopped another guy's head off with a machete while the guy was listening to music or something. I believe they'd had some sort of argument about the guy in front putting his seat back too far or something equally inconsequential.

He was in the news recently for being up for parole or getting more privileges in prison..... scary.

I've been having a hard time with one of my sons, who started innocently smoking weed and has become addicted quite quickly. As a result, we have been in a family drug rehab and education program. I was shocked at how different marijuana is now compared to when I was my son's age, with the potency and addictive qualities increasing more than ten-fold since then. It has caught a whole generation off-guard, as parents like me wrongly assume it is similar to what we knew (that is, the "least harmful" of a slew of drugs and "better" than alcohol or cigarettes if a kid must experiment...).

The same is true for other drugs. I can tell from first hand experience that the drug counselors in this major metropolitan area program are having a hard time keeping up with the constant stream of newly created designer drugs on the street, and the use of household supplies and chemicals just to get high - paint thinners, cough and cold medicine, hand sanitizer - the list goes on and on. I thought I was familiar with most of the recreational drugs out there - the names have changed, but the drugs are still around- but going through this chemical dependency program blew my freaking mind at how many new drugs have come to be in the last 20 years, how potent they are, and how much long term damage they inflict. One of the truly terrifying things about several of these new drugs is the fact that if taken in the wrong way, wrong dosage, or in the wrong combination, a psychotic break can occur...and the person doesn't recover, doesn't come back. In listening to the counselors, from their experiences, it sounds like this is one of the hardest things for them to deal with, as in many instances they knew the person before, and see the zombie that has been created in the aftermath of the drug use. Sadly, one of the main culprits is an "all natural" drug: Salvia. I know that there are many kids who believe that naturally occurring substances are safer than man made synthetics, and yet, from what these counselors say, salvia is often associated with these psychotic breaks. We gardeners know salvia as one of the biggest plant families around, providing a huge array of perennial and annual flowers, shrubs, ground covers, etc., so unfortunately, I don't know which it is. However, I don't believe its the one used as smudge in medicine ceremonies.

I don't understand this resistance to just wanting a lab report. How else am I going to play armchair detective?

Seriously, I want a lab report. I hope we get one. I just want to know. I'm not sure I believe anyone can or can't be dissuaded from drug use in any case. The "war on drug" is a complete and utter disaster. I just want to know because I'm curious. I'm not trying to speak for how it might better society necessarily. I just want old fashioned news. Just the facts.

I expect a lab report and autopsy will be leaked.

The tabloids have a profit motive, and you are not the only curious one, Danny.
This is one of the most shocking occurrences ever and that generates interest.

This is the stuff my nightmares are made of! Just utterly flabbergasting. I think what is really disturbing to me (besides a man eating another man's face, of course) is that this guy "growled" at the officer before he went back to eating the other guy. Stories like these make me not want to leave my house.

Along with bath salts that's another one I haven't heard of. I'm sorry to hear about your son. Hugs to you and best wishes to your family.

The first thing I thought when I heard about this was "I hope the victim died quickly." I am horrified that he is still alive! I can't even imagine the awful life he will have if he survives. Considering the extent of his injuries, he will not be able to see, talk, eat or even breathe normally again even with skin grafts etc. He has no family or friends stepping up to support him. It's just so horrible.

Indeed.
I hate to say this but if the universe had any mercy he would have died.
Then again life is so precious.
Perhaps the victim will somehow find the strength and grace to not just survive, but to thrive.

This story is full of interesting ethical angles.
This is going to require a zillion surgeries, all on tax dollars for a homeless guy who was apparently also doing the same drug.
I say this because that is what was suggested by a news story since they were both nude.

So we taxpayers are about to spend millions of dollars fixing him up, so he can go back out and live under a bridge and do more drugs.
I'm not suggesting there is any other ethical alternative, it just makes me go, UGH! :o :knockout:

I don't think the men were doing drugs with each other. According to CNN's post today, " [...] The [security] footage shows that attacker, identified by Miami-Dade Police as Rudy Eugene, 31, walking along the sidewalk and then stopping in a shaded area created by the tramway bridge. He apparently attacks the victim, dragging him out from the shade, stripping the victim's clothes off and then beating him as the victim kicks his legs in an apparent attempt to fight back. http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2012/05/30/security-video-shows-entire-miami-zombie-attack/

So perhaps the victim was an innocent homeless guy that was there at the wrong time and place. Regardless, no one deserves this. I wonder if there is a fund where we can donate money to help the victim's medical costs. :(

This is horrifying. I also must say that I'm a bit intrigued about the perp and what his mental status/hallucinatory state may have been. I feel just awful for the victim.

The other attack was just outside Winnipeg (I'm Canadian). A truly awful story...difficult to write much about it, but suffice to say the attacker suffers from schizophrenia that was not being properly treated at the time. Unfortunately (fortunately?) his responsibility for the crime was called into question because of his mental state, which is why he is now going to be getting day trips (escorted) I believe.

Canada was collectively horrified.

I haven't looked at this story - just too difficult.

My teenage son told me about this story. Horrifying, just horrifying.

My son also told me that if there was ever a better horror story to not do drugs, this story is it.

From what I read, the victom was random and the person who did the assult came upon the victim who was sleeping. Random attack.

Unfortunately, 2 of my younger kids over heard my teenager telling me about this and my 9 year old was so freaked out he was crying when he was alone in his room. So I let him fall asleep in my room. Poor thing.

Yes, that Canada case really scared me.

Random acts of violence are the scariest type and makes you realize how fragile life is that some crazy person can come along and destroy it.

I certainly hope they are not using extrodinary measures to keep the victim alive. If that were me, I don't think I would want to keep living. And the guy has no support network. His family apparently thought he was dead for thirty years.

Actually it's not. Bath salts are not actual bath salts, although they were at one time. Bath salts in this context contains an amphetamine.

Yikes. I just saw a picture of the victim taken in the hospital (you can find it if you look, but you might not want to!). Death would be the most attractive option by far for this guy :( Yes, life is precious, but I would not want to live if I were in his condition.

This isn't pro life, but a big props to the cop who shot the assailant.

We do NOT need that kind of people roaming the streets. Anyone's streets. If arrested and then processed, rehabilitated, whatever. Dead and gone is best. Doesn't change the outcome, but it is the soundest prevention of a repeat incident.

I wish the cop shot the assailant earlier... so that the poor victim would have more of a face left.

This guy from New Jersey who had some excitement the same day as Miami Zombie Face Chewer will be roaming the streets again eventually. He doesn't seem too stable.

Meanwhile, here's an update on Miami Zombie and background information about his victim, a very smart Stuyvesant High School graduate who developed schizophrenia, leading to a life on the streets and resulting in being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Very sad.
