I thought it was already legal in some states. Is it now in the state constitution or something? Way to go Maine!

It has been legal in some other states through legislation, but (finally) became legal in Maine through popular vote. Three years ago, legislation legalizing gay marriage was overturned here which was heartbreaking. So happy for the turnaround!

That is a milestone, Maria! Thanks for making me aware of it. "The New York Times" says that Maryland also made it legal by legislation yesterday.

I'm in Maryland and I am so damn proud of my state for voting YES on question 6 to legalize gay marriage! :appl: :love: :appl:

I'm originally from MD, now in PA and I am very proud of the Marylanders and people across this country who supported the legalization of gay marriage. Awesome Job!

Popular opinion is turning very quickly on this issue - :appl: - it looks like approval of a gay marriage law is ahead in Washington State too. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out nationally over the next decade or so.

ETA - oops - add Minnesota to the list - voters there are on their way to voting down a constitutional amendment that would deny same-sex couples the right to marry!

I guess the difference with the Maine situation is that gay marriage is now legal here because the populace has voted to make it legal, as opposed to the populace upholding legislation (as was done in Maryland and I believe Washington). In 2009, our then governor signed a bill legalizing same sex marriage but then it was overturned through referendum. This year, it was voted in as a straight question, not as approval/disapproval of a bill passed in the legislature.

It's a subtle difference, but enough of one to make we Mainers who supported it all along run around saying We're first! We're first! :lol:

From the Seattle Times: "The measure asked Washingtonians to approve or reject a state law legalizing same-sex marriage that lawmakers passed earlier this year. That law was signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire but has been on hold pending the election's outcome."

Its about time! I wish we Californians would be so progressive and as a whole welcome Gay Marriage. I do agree that the tide is turning, and in younger generations, like college age and younger, this is a non-issue, if my kids and their friends are any example.

Next, we have to eradicate discrimination and bullying in schools of perceived differences, as gay kids - or kids who are perceived as Gay - are STILL targeted.

I cannot wait until CA joins. It still baffles me on how such a melting pot state, filled with such a culturally diverse populous, home to West Hollywood and the Castro District, has not legalized gay marriage. I would have figured we'd be at the front grounds.

Totally the right thing! I actually posted on fb about it and asked why my fellow Marylanders voted yes, like me. One of my staunch republican friends said that exact same thing 'it's just the right thing to do'...that, above anything else made me VERY happy to hear!!

Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maine residents must be so proud! This is huge! A majority voted was asked to vote for rights of the minority and ended up granting them rights. Definitely a difference from history and a huge step for marriage equality. I hope this issue is resolved in the next few years country wide and we don't have to worry about it anymore.
