Hello all. Been posting here more than i ever been. Great forum great people. And very helpful. Many thanks! Among other different stones. I am considering a Mahenge Garnet. But i'm all over the place trying to decide. I came up with three different ones. Never bought from them before. With the expected Asia Lounges one. Being way more expensive than the others.

Steve's is more included. Color described as Pink only. No actual picture in natural daylight on the hand.

Really like the video. Sparkles great. But may be too light.

Crystal is transparent? Being a newbie. Would that mean it's better than eye clean? Even without a good video. With that price. Figure this be the top dog.

I really, strongly prefer the Moriarty's one. And ignore the terrible hand photo... they're always terrible on that site. Lovely, family owned business! I've purchased from them previously and been very pleased.

I am leaning towards this one now. But Steve is not mentioned as the cutter. Hence the Cut Grade being very good, not excellent. Like in some of his others stones. And has very good polish and symmetry. Instead of excellent. But the Clarity Grade being VS1 is better on this stone. :) I am probably being too fussy considering the price.

Maybe you can ask who cut it? Definitely looks precision though.

Agree with @Autumn in New England , the first one (from Moriarty) looks really good and the price is reasonable considering it is precision cut in the US. The last one from Asia Lounge is…well, let’s just say I cannot understand how it can be so expensive, maybe I am missing something? I guess it sparkles a lot but that picture alone is not very convincing to me.

The moregems one is the nicest by far, echoing the above.

Although the purplish modifier declared here raises my eyebrow and I would be concerned about a brown modifier, the photo appears to be better than the other two (not moregems) - it is over 2ct and under 200$

Thanks toomuchB. I want to go more high end though. If i may ask. I'm not positive. But in a post a while back. I think you mentioned something about a window. In a stone from Asia Lounges. Again, i think, I'm not positive. If so, wouldn't expect that from them.

Thanks! My concern with Steve's is. His description says Cut Very Good. Polish and Symmetry Very Good. Some of his other stones description says Cut Excellent. Same with Polish and Symmetry. And with him being the cutter. Which is what i would want.

As far as Asia Lounges. I guess they don't rely on their pictures much. From what i gather. You talk to Simon. And he tells you everything. Their stones suppose to be the cream of the crop. Why their prices are so high. But i can't find anyone who bought from them? I tried contacting them three days ago. No reply.

I'm very familiar with Moriarty. He cuts nice stones; he also charges 90% full brick and mortar retail. Actually, he is brick and mortar store in NE Indianna, not far from Chicago.

Nice stone, but if you look you can find them even larger for $250 to $300 a carat and less at 3 carats. These are American dealers too.

Hello all. I am narrowing it down to these three. I mentioned Asia Lounges before. I'm sure their stones are the tops. And your paying for that. I could buy from them. So i am not ruling them out completely. But nobody here i believe bought from them. So i don't know what they had to say about their stone?

Steve's Stone: He did not cut it. His VS1 is his highest clarity. Better then Eye Clean. Cut Grade Very Good. Is really very well cut. But the facets Meets are not quite good enough for excellent. But Polish is more important than Meets.

All That Glitters: Allen doesn't seem to sit well here i've read. But, i have bought from him way back. With no complaints at all. I'm sure it would look great in real life. And i like the larger size. 8.59cts. $6872.

Africa Gems: Definitely like the larger size. Bought from Marc before with no complaints. 15% off still going on.

Your thoughts? Thanks!

For sure, I did not mean to recommend you buy what I linked, it was just to show you the material is not worth 5.5k for that size like the Asia Lounges piece. A window/lack of a window does bring a 200$ stone to 5.5k else cutters would avoid windows!

Also, not everything on that site is worth the price. For example, a minty green Congo tourmaline like this is not worth 1000/ct, no matter what. Maybe if it was a specialty cut by John Dyer or other gem artist, which this certainly is not.

They have some amazing pieces, but being a boutique, their more typical gems are higher priced, for the branding/limited inventory/experience/service etc.

I suspect few/no one here has bought from them because they are a small boutique, little inventory, low number of clients, but hopefully if someone has they will chime in.

I suggest you don't fall into the assumption that if they offer it = it is a top stone. Use photos, videos to judge.

My thoughts on the other two garnets you found: they definitely have promise! The main thing I would be concerned about with large garnet is darkness and color shifting. I would be concerned that they might shift to a brownish pink color too strongly in some lights, or be rather dark outside of ideal lighting. But they certainly have potential.

Not sure what color exactly you are after but Jeff White had some gorgeous garnet roughs for custom cut. Could cut a variety of sizes including over 10ct pieces. Just another avenue to consider, bonus is you get precision cut in a cut/shape of choice.

It is from April so not sure what rough is available.

Thanks very much for your help! I like the Pinkish/Purple color of all three. With respect to them. I hear what your saying about Asia Lounges. This stone does look very nice. Most likely is. And very rare. If, the vibrant purple of this gem remains open regardless of the light level like they said. But the price! Whew!

I was thinking about darkness and color shifting with the larger sizes too. Like you mentioned. I wouldn't like that brown in some lights. Or too dark outside of ideal lighting either. All a no-no.

I think for the price. Steve's would be the best buy. Was not cut by him. But it's still well cut.

Bought from Marc Africa Gems before. Was happy. But excellent cut like he said. IMO unlikely.

I bought from Jeff White years ago. He's great. Definitely a good avenue to consider. And no worries about the cut, that's for sure.

Well thinking about all this. Sure keeping me busy. =)2All in a good way of course.

OP, if size if a concern you can plug the mm sizes of any of the stones into this tool (I swear they should pay me for how often I post it lol) to get a accurate visualization.

Way overpriced. There were and are western dealers selling vivid purple garnets for $150 to $400 a carat.

Thanks! I'm doing that now! Good tool. :lol-2:How much do i owe you!

I personally feel these are exorbitant prices for Garnets. Honestly I’d just go to Gem Rock Auctions, pick someone with a decent rating, message them offline and buy one. Or pick someone on IG.

I was referring to the owners of the site owing me money since I link this site often, but I won't turn down your generosity :wink1:

I was thinking about darkness and color shifting with the larger sizes too.

Do you have a preference between the brilliant cuts and the brilliant/step cuts?
I wonder if one is suited over the other better in color /brightness perception for a larger garnet? To be ‘finer’.
I contacted Yavorskyy years ago for a just shy of 5ct in their typical brilliant/step cut cushion (it was under 1k) and the video hand shot did not wow much in that medium pink garnet material. Maybe brilliant would have been better for that material?

Is it silly to think the boutique stones you’ve linked have much better color saturation/hue than the 100-300/ct material larger garnets found on Etsy? I assume, no it’s not silly.

Hello and thanks! I don't have a preference between those two cuts. As far as shape. I like oval, cushion, trillion, and round. As long as they have great color, cut, and alot of sparkle.

As mentioned due to these sizes. Concerned about darkness and color shifting.
Turning brownish under those conditions is a no-no. But, i may have no way around that? And do lean towards the more larger sizes.

I'm thinking for the price. Steve's seems to be the better buy.

I dropped Jeff White an email last night. Hope to hear from him soon.

I agree. It's not silly to think. Asia Lounges stones have much better color, etc, etc. They sure should be. But that's a matter of personal opinion. If their worth it or not. To each his own.

Everyone on this forum has been great. Back to work. Not really work, fun.

Good advice.

Just make sure they invoice through PayPal. Protection!

Just because a stone has a much higher price on these sites mentioned above does not make them better stones that a person could find for much cheaper on IG, FB, even ESTY and e bay. But people do think that the higher the price the better the stone sometimes. Fact is, these people are paying for the seller's name, not the stone.

Hello all. This is from Africa Gems. Indoor and outdoor videos. I'm a newbie at posting videos and pictures. So i hope they come out ok. Window anywhere? Not sure.

Here's a screenshot of the two videos. In between my two browsers. That are much smaller on my desktop. Notice the "indoor" picture here. Is darker or even maybe looks brownish. Compared to the much larger picture in my other post.

To get the videos here, copy-paste/drag them to Imgur - https://imgur.com/ - and then share the resulting page. You can copy paste/drag both videos to the same page.

I see no window.

Ha, I knew something was up with the garnet listing. Nothing gets passed me lol.

Here is the current listing:

Here is a screenshot of this listing for the same stone that I took in late 2021. I've been on a long term hunt for a purple garnet so I save everything I see. If anyone is seriously interested in this stone, definitely negotiate down! Of course, I am not 'mad' at the seller or trying to bring them down - they could ask for a million dollars since after all it is their stone. Maybe they will argue their new price is justified because they could not get another like it. I have no issue with that.
I am however prioritizing the interests of a potential buyer who might come across this and find the information useful.

The lower price in the screenshot is backed up by the internet archive.

Window anywhere?
I don’t see a window straight on.
There will be tilt windows though- some have said in here that this style of cutting has tilt windows they strongly dislike. It’s personal opinion. The bigger facets in that cutting style of course give that lovely facet pattern, but the bigger facets don’t bounce around as much as smaller facets to concentrate perception of color and if it’s going to window at a tilt , the bigger facets will amplify that effect.

My newbie eyes can't tell.
Here’s an easy pick listing to show you a not super clear (as you can still see facet junctions) but still a window. In the video you can see where that window enlarges and becomes a tilt window.

Here’s an example where I would ask them to rotate slower, to a greater degree, and to the other axis to see the tilt window, for a full evaluation.

Exact same with this one

This last one is good to look at, as I’m getting the impression the pavilion may not be exactly centered. Therefore to not get a window straight on, it needs to sit a bit tilted. And the tilt window will be magnified when tilted the opposite way.

I am not recommending any of these Etsy sellers as I have no experience with them. Etsy is just an easy place to pick & copy examples from. :)

Plus - some gems you can find at multiple sources. Those sources have different prices and different return policies. Explore them.
Africa gems /jtv /pearlmans as an example.

I have one of these on order with Jeff!! Will probably be a few months out still. Personally I am still after a good malaia garnet that is a peachy pink in color. Those are hard to come by. So, OP, a lot depends on what color you are after.
