I found a VS1, G color, x symmetry, x polish, hearts and arrows ideal round cut .74ct diamond. Price was 1950.00. Oh and did I mention it was certified. Certified with a EGL I certificate xD.. When I got the diamond, I researched the different certifying groups and found out getting an EGL diamond was like playing Russian roulette with your wallet. I took it to get appraised today from a private appraiser, whom doesn't sell jewelry, so he was unbiased. He graded my diamond Is1 clarity, L color, very good polish and x symmetry. He also said my diamond was previously set and removed, and possibly re-cut. He then looked at my EGL certificate and laughed, telling me to steer clear of an EGL diamond. When he told me my actual diamond grading, I :*(... He said EGL graders don't grade lenient, they grade incompetently. So, I contacted the diamond dealer, and am getting a full refund thank God.... I will never buy another EGL diamond.. Ever..

Now, I find myself looking for a GIA, .70-.75ct d-h color, SI1 clarity diamond, excellent round cut. And you know what, I am still paranoid that even the GIA diamond I find will woop me in the butt again.. Anyways, will my eyes be able to tell a difference between a VS1 and an SI1 diamond, seeing as I cannot afford a GIA VS1 diamond anymore. Also, is there anything else I should be looking for in my diamond?
Thanks guys, and my advice is to stay away from EGL diamonds.

well I am glad you were able to return it! I would also recommend buying only from vendors with a solid return policy. If you would like we can try to help you find some online stones.

Help is welcome!

The diamond I want now is a GIA certified round cut, excellent/ideal cut, D-H color, preferably in the median of that, VS2-IS1 clarity, .7-.75ct weight. Preferably x polish and x symmetry. Under 2800$.

I really want E F or G color, definitely not below an H. I would have a better color grade, than a VS clarity grade. Color and Cut are the most important to me, as long as it is Is1 clarity, my fiance shouldn't be able to see inclusions in the diamond, especially since she is super untrained.

To get in the colorless range it's a little over budget

The H looks really promising

Ehh, I found a few under 2700 wire price lol, with F and G color. Was an excellent cut stone as well.

I'm not sure if you're open to the idea but you will probably get more bang for your buck if you consider buying an antique diamond.
While it is true that many old stones are graded by the EGL or uncertified, it certainly doesn't mean that they aren't gorgeous and worth buying. Many people here, myself included, have uncertified stones or EGL graded antique stones that are beautiful. I DO however think the key when buying those stones is to buy from a trusted vendor (like old world diamonds, singlestone, jewels by erica grace etc).

Here are a few you might consider if you're interested.

Just above your budget but a lovely old cut round: http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/inv_details.php?ID=1565&SHAPE=EU&PAGE=15

What exactly makes a diamond an antique diamond?
All gems are as near old as the earth lol.

My EGL was cut in the 50s, was beautiful, but L color, looked too yellow. In fact, when he showed me his master diamonds, even the H had just a tad hint of yellow in it, course I am sight sensitive, color, inclusions etc.

How about that one?

SKU: 5F6YF5H6
Cash Price $2,645
Credit Price: $2,699
Shape: Round Brilliant
Carat Weight: 0.71
Color: F
Clarity: Si1
Cut Grade: Excellent
Table %: 55.00
Depth %: 59.10
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.82-5.88x3.46
Length/Width ratio: 1.01
GIA: 13591327

The report is from 2004, which is too old for me to consider, and there is not enough information to really assess cut to my preferences. I don't know if this vendor can call in stones and assess eye-clean status either, which is necessary with an SI1.

Diamond Information:
Stock Number: 379657
Price: $2591
Bank wire price: $2539.18

Carat weight: 0.71
Cut: Excellent
Color: G
Clarity: SI1
Price per carat: $3650
Depth %: 61.8
Table %: 56
Symmetry: V. Good
Polish: V. Good
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.70-5.73x3.53

This one is more promising by the numbers. You will want the vendor to call the stone in and assess it prior to purchase, provide you with pictures or other imaging, and give an assessment of its eye clean status. It is also a very old cert, 2006, which is not something I would consider. Too much can happen to a diamond in 5 years, I would want a more recent cert to make sure no damage occurred that affected clarity, in particular.

Both the stones you have linked are "virtual stones" meaning they are listed on an online inventory to which many vendors have access. Those inventories are not updated as often as they should be, neither of the stones you have picked may be available.

In reality, your budget it a little tight for what you want, you will have to compromise somewhere -- carat, color, clarity -- as the picks by other posters indicate.

You might not find exactly what you are looking for with your budget. Cut isn't great on this last one but it sounds like color and clarity are more important to you.

It scored 4.0 on the Holloway Cut Adviser. Staying at 2 or less is a good place to start to weed out the poorer cut stones.

Question, will faint fluorescence visually effect the diamond?

Not necessarily, it's just that older certs typically mean that the diamond was previously purchased and worn and then either sold, upgraded, or traded. This means that the stone could have been damaged during the years that the owner was wearing it, you would either want to ask that the stone be recerted to be sure that the stone wasn't damaged somehow, or have an appraiser check it for you during the return period to make sure that the cert is still fairly representing the diamond.

Diamond hunting is so meticulous lol. I might as well wait until I can do a 3000$ budget and get the diamond I want.
