Let me explain. A blister pearl develops when a bead nucleus is glued to the inner surface of the shell and the mollusk then coats it and covers it with pearl nacre. To harvest, the shell is cut around the pearl ''bump''.
A mabe is when the back of this blister pearl is cut away, the original bead nucleus removed and usually replaced with some type of resin or some other substance, and a new backing, either mother of pearl shell or plastic is glued on. Hence, the pearl is assembled.
Some very beautiful jewelry is made with mabe pearls. Don''t let the fact that it is not a fully formed whole pearl stop you.
