hi there peeps

I am planning ahead for my daughters with a luxury watch.
There are many brands out there and wanting something classical for them.
Typically I would choose a rolex with diamond markers on a two tone bracelet.
I have a JLC reverse duo - which I could also consider as a watch for them

Any other options?

I am hoping @dancingfire will chime in with his views as well.

I bought my wife a 31mm 18K RG/SS. On the other hand IMO, JLC is the best bang for the buck in high end watches. Here is a pic of my wife's watch.

Thanx!
My partner liked a Cartier that had diamonds on the bezel or were they markers- I forget. But Cartier are typically automated/ battery operated. So I didn’t really give it another thought. But it did look really nice!

What are your thoughts?

I have always been a mechanical watch type of person. I don't know anything about quartz watches.

Greg, You may not like what I’m about to say. I would wait until your daughters are older and talk to them about their preferences. Fashion can change dramatically within in a few years. Unfortunately this is also true with watches. Most young women like what they like and what’s in style at the time they are going to wear the watch will probably have a lot to do with what they prefer.

I love the watch @Dancing Fire posted but 10 years from now smaller face watches may be what is in style.

Thanx @Calliecake I appreciate the insight- just planning well ahead to beat price rises... but no point buying stuff that they won’t wear!

Just thought there might be a classic style. Just like earring studs - martini, baskets and bezels are generally the style with slight variations here and there. So- guess similarly with watches... slight nuances here and there...

More bling for me then!!!

I lusted after an Ebel Beluga for years, mainly for their curvy shiny SS straps/bracelets which are unusual to me.

I eventually bought 2 online and had them imported from USA, one for daily/business wear (the rectangular one) and one for dressier occasions.

Both have MOP faces with diamonds.

Not a well-known brand and not widely available, however I love them.

If I had a spare penny or two, I would get the versions with more diamonds.

DK :))

This x 10000.....

Also I had a convo over Christmas with my good friend who's been an avid Rolex collector for 30 years now. He clued me in that for instance two tone Rolex are much cheaper generally on the preloved market than stainless steel ones, even when they're pricier to buy. So really bad investment pieces compared to ss. I always thought I had stumbled upon a bargain when I happened to find a two tone.... And there are a lot of other details to consider as well. According to him, the best investment pieces today are classic preloved SS. He's had a great hand in selecting his pieces and at least doubled his investment, sometimes making 10 x... But he really really knows his stuff (it's his hobby like the prosumers here on PS) and I realized that I just don't know enough to make a good buy. If you really want your daughters to mainly wear and enjoy the watch, I'd say wait until they decide..... For example I hate (and always have disliked) MOST round watches with a passion. Don't know why... But the Rolex Form is OK... So I'd have been delighted to receive a JlC reverso, or a Cartier tank, but not a round model. That's not even considering the metal colour or size question....

While I collect vintage ladies watches mostly, I have a few more current.
Will your daughter (s) prefer a larger face or smaller?
Are they more sporty or dressy?
I have the ladies size gold Rolex with diamonds but younger women seem to like the mid or even men’s size watches
Cartier Tank is a classic design, you can get SS and gold (I had the 3 link lines of gold - there’s also a single or double link line). Or go all out for the gold - the Tank Francaise version is larger face and more modern.
I have the two tone JLC Reverso with diamonds - very nice. I prefer a gold or stainless steel band to leather but others prefer the leather.
There’s also Ebel and Piaget, both higher end.
The Longines DocleVito in 18kt with diamonds is also very nice.

I think that regardless of gender, taste in watches is extremely personal, and it also changes with time and experience.

I always quite liked watches but as I look back now, I remember lusting after some Gucci 'G' watch and then a Tag Heuer Daytona, which I now think of as "quartz, steel, overpriced" and "fussy, trading off past glories, overpriced" respectively  lol

My taste now has become more selective - I now only really like extremely simple and easy-to-read dials, because I like to know the time at a glance and love the simplicity of the 'clean' look. (And no, not because I am getting Old Man Eyesight ;) LOL)

If I had had the money to buy the watches mentioned earlier when I was younger, I'd now have them in the draw and never wear them - I'd look at them and think of past times with fondness, but I wouldn't wear them out and about and enjoy them, which is surely the point of a watch.

So... I guess I'm trying to say that unless you are buying something super-classic and ageless, like an understated single-metal Rolex with a plain, non-jeweled dial, or something similar in concept but mega-money, like a Patek, it's entirely possible that buying something now will just mean it ends up not being worn over the longer term.

IMHO you may be better putting the money into a high interest account and letting it grow, adding to it when you can - and then, when your daughters are at the age that they know their own style, they can get something they love and you can be there with them when they buy it :)

Thanx all for the beautiful insights...
I think saving money now would be the better option... till they reach the age where they would appreciate (and care for) luxury watches... it may never happen and yay for me! :D

Hi Greg, I think this is the best option.
Another thought if I may...Education is super expensive and I would take that money you had earmarked for their watches (and that is such a lovely idea by the way...your darling daughters are super lucky to have such warm and wonderful dads!) and put it in a college fund. The best gift a parent can give a child (besides unconditional love and support and encouragement and acceptance) is being able to help them with their education IMO.

This is an excellent idea :)

You could also look at other options for long term financial products - IIRC here in the UK a parent can start a Pension Fund for their child basically as soon as it is born, and I know I'd appreciate another 18 years of interest and growth, rather than starting at 18 and having to put away as much as possible forever! (Well, the latter should always be the case, but 18 more years can only help :D lol)

Good idea! Also, I notice that watches are way less popular with kids these days, my teens never wear one as they use their phones to tell the time. Who knows if this will always be the case but I expect a nice watch will not be on their wish list until they are much, much older.

Hi,

These are girls. They are going to want diamond studs. Look for those before watches. Collect them as finances permit. I can't recommend the size. Lovely graduation gift when they are older.

Annette

How old are your kids? My dad has always been into Rolex watches so he gave me my first one at 15. I will admit it was a little weird being the only kid in high school and college wearing a Rolex, but at that time I don’t think most of my friends even knew what it was! That being said I still treasured it. It was a datejust in sterling and yellow gold. When I graduated from grad school he bought me another one. Oyster perpetual datejust in white gold with a mother of Pearl face. Significantly more expensive and it meant even more to me at that age. Fast forward 10 years and he let me “borrow” his yellow gold Daytona because by then the look was the bigger face/style and I have been wearing that one almost exclusively for the past 4 years. Although the other day I put my white gold one back on to change it up and it’s been nice to see her again! In the end, personally I don’t think you can go wrong with a classic Rolex. They are timeless, beautiful, and I think nowadays even younger people recognize and appreciate how special they are, even if not fully! Yes taste will change but it’s not to say it’s the last watch they will ever own! But again, I do think it depends on their ages and if they are ready for that kind of responsibility of taking care of something so pricey and special.

Not all girls Annette. I never wanted diamond studs.

HI,

Missy- truth be told, I didn't either. It was only later in life that I wanted them. Well, whatever Gregg thinks they might like. A watch seemed harder to project.

@Bron357 I think you collect watches. I was picking up a repair at a local jeweler and saw this antique watch. It’s encrusted with rubies. Its so unusual.I had to take a few pics for you..It was $15k! Very reasonable!

Thank you MamaBean
“Someone” is a little overly ambitious with their pricing :naughty:
A watch like that is realistically worth under $2,500.
This one, eBay, opening bid $995....

Yes..I sized that place up...I saw some pretty included OEC’s in the bitty size and they were astronomical! I won’t be going back..They were very nice though..

How about a Lange&Sohne Saxonia or Patek Phillipe Calatrava? Both are absolutely classic watches that won't go out of style - not to mention resale value is good too.

I get the most wear out of my JLC Reverso Duo, but not everyone likes it!

@Alexiszoe thanx for the considerations! Great watches indeed!

Greg, did you buy it?. The backside of Langes are so beautiful . That looks like the ultra thin?. I love RG watches but I'd prefer white metal rings.

Yes, the back was sublime!!!! Can see the individual engraving... sadly, I didn’t take a picture of it....
It is super thin, too!!!

Sadly, I didn’t get it.... priced $AUD22k. Maybe Usd$18k. Might have to wait till I get to USA to find cheaper pricing...

There is also the Lange 31 which I didn’t dare to ask to try it on....only AUD$220k with 31 day power reserve and a special Allen key to wind the watch. Maybe when I pick up the Cartier from service I will try it on!!!

Each Lange have its own unique individual engraving which they can identify who engraved the watch. It is like a signature. Here is the back side of my two RG Langes.
