Hi -- I''ve seen in my reading that this is a good place for straight advice about diamond purchases, and I am in need of help!

My husband is going to upgrade my plain platinum wedding band with a diamond band to match my e-ring, and I find myself with lots of questions -- I''ll try to limit myself to a few, though.

First, the ering. The center stone is a 1.37 square emerald, H color, SI1, with 3,9 pt tapered baguettes (F/G color, VS1) on either side. I''ve had a lot of trouble trying to attach a picture of the actual ring, but you can see the setting here.

The wedding band that Ingwer "matches" to the ering setting has 3, 10 pt straight baguettes (SB). I''m not really crazy about it, so I looked at other Ingwer settings and found 2 I like:

Band 571 has a 15 point round center stone, with a 12 pt SB, 13 pt R and 8 pt SB on either side.

Band 569 has a 1/4 carat round center stone, with a 14 pt SB and 12 pt R on either side.

Here are my questions:

1. How do the bands I like "match" in terms of carat weight with my ering? The jeweler we bough the ering from was concerned about making sure the side stones were sized right in relationship to the center stone. Does the same principle apply to wedding bands/erings? I will wear both, together on my left hand (BTW, I wear a size 8.5 ring -- which would probably fit the thumbs of a lot of you -- and my finger length seems "standard"). My DH is concerned that the new band not "overwhelm" the ering.

2. Given that I''ll wear the two rings together, am I mixing too many different kinds of stones? Would it be better to replace the round stones with a square shape (preferably emerald, but maybe princess)?

3. Along those lines, is it worth it to select the stones separately from the setting? Some retailers (and etailers) indicate that they can only order these rings already set. Is that common for bands?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The band #3 sees to be flat rather than rounded in profile, so this may make it not fit that well. My vote goes for #2 since the size of the baguettes seems to offset well the size of the sides of the ring, and the prongs are of the same 'flavour' (bar setting like the sides of the ring again)... but these are just pictures... I am curious about the ring's look with a square center.
