Lowering the Mount on a Ring?

Is this possible to do with a diamond engagement ring? Or would I need to have the ring completely redone? It gets caught on a lot of things (sweaters, jackets)

I really don't think that VRB was "attacking" you. There's no need to be so defensive, though I understand that engagements lead to high emotions. I believe that VRB just wants you to have a ring that you love. If that's the one you already have, than great. If not, it would be much easier to let your fiance know early. Hopefully this doesn't offend as that isn't my intent. As for lowering, I don't think it would work.

Nor was it my intent to attack you - I'm glad you've grown to love your ring. As to whether the stone can be lowered, it's hard to tell from the photos. There might be some room to lower the stone, but... it also depends on how the head is set on the band, among other things. It would probably be best to take it to a good jeweler who can examine it in person, and get their opinion. It might also be possible to tighten or otherwise change the prongs so they don't catch on things so easily.

I'm glad you have grown to love your ring! I'm not sure it can be lowered - to my eye there doesn't seem to be enough room below the stone (the halo part is pretty close to your finger, going by the pic) and it might require a lot of prong work - but a jeweler would be able to tell better than me. Maybe the prongs could be filed down or rounded a bit to prevent snagging. Mine gets caught occasionally - I turn my ring so the stone is on the palm side of my hand while putting on a coat or sweater.

If you mean without prongs, you would need to ask your jeweller if it could be bead set, but from the picture the stone is
maybe deeper than the metal part of your ring. Maybe the jeweller could fit a bezel on top of the halo to give a bit of height
and set it into the halo like that. Best to get the eyes of a professional on the actual ring as others said.
You would need to like bead set and bezel set styles of course. I hope you get the ring to how you like it, it looks
very nice the way it is.

Prongs that are done right shouldn't "grab" clothing and snag bits of towels, etc. If that's what's happening, then have a competent and meticulous jeweler work on the prongs.

If you mean that the stone itself catches on clothing, that stone is essentially the same as a solitaire, set in those prongs. You would need a larger halo that allows the stone to be recessed down in it, not sticking up in prongs. Or, as someone already said, it might be possible for a jeweler to replace that prong head with one that drops the stone a bit lower.

Those prongs extend way above the halo. I have actually never seen anything quite like that. I'm assuming it is because it is a stock setting so the head allows a wider range of diamond sizes to fit into the halo. You would need to talk to the jeweler about lower the diamond but I'm not sure how much can be done since the ring does extend over the current halo. You would probably need to start over again with a whole new setting.

Ideally I like it whent he diamond sits on the halo. or just a tad bit over. That way it isn't being knocked around or getting caught on stuff.

I have seen many halo stones set high like that out in the world and on the internet, just not on PS. I will tell you that someone local who I met on PS upgraded her diamond AND had it set lower in the same setting (I went to the jeweler with her and her ring looked great after!). So my bet is that it can be lowered with a different type of prongs/head. You need a jeweler to answer, though!

Do you know how much that would cost? I think I'll take the plunge & inquire with our jeweler about it. I realize I've been wishy-washy, but it doesn't hurt to ask (for those who think I don't love my ring, I do, I just want it to be more "user-friendly")

I'd like for the diamond to be lowered a bit, so hopefully that could be a possibility. I'm just afraid it will cost over $1000 to do that...if so, I might have to pass.
