Like all the other forum newbies I have begun my hunt for the ring. Despite our long term status (~10years) I want this to be a complete surprise to her. That means me making the choices. I have bought many pieces of jewelry for her before so I am pretty confident in my decision skills with regards to her tastes.

I was originally drawn in by asscher style cuts. I think they are amazing. I love the way that you are looking into the diamond as opposed to looking at it. That made me wonder what other types of cuts could I find that really showcase depth and clarity in lieu of the popular high flash stones I mostly see.

What other cuts should I look for and please provide pictures if available.

emerald cut

Also look at emerald cut diamonds.
When well cut they are fantastic.

Also there is a new Asscher cut designed and cut by PS members.
It is called Ocatvia.

The first two are now available and creating quite a buzz.
I may be an Octavia buyer next year.

The biggest question I have for you is:

Is that what SHE wants?

You say you''re drawn in on this, and you know her style - but does she stop and pause at jewelry store windows and admire the sparkly rings? Does she tend to go for cleaner, modern lines or something a little flashier?

Remember that as much as you may want to like it, you''re risking a lot by going it totally alone, so you need to be really careful in selecting something that she''ll love.

As far as other cuts to look for, emerald cuts are beautiful and draw you in the same way Asschers do. They''re both stunning cuts.

One thing to be aware of is that Asschers face up small for the carat weight because of the depth, so while you may be paying the mark-up for a 1ct stone or over, it definitely won''t face up like a 1ct round or princess.

Also older cuts like the OMC and OEC.

I am also not won over by flashy stones that to me just look too busy when you gaze into them. My GOG OMC is perfect for me as it has great fire and sparkle but I can also gaze into it at that wonderful maltase cross.

Asscher cuts are amazing. Make sure you check out the Asscher that has been develops on these forums by Kark: Link
They have just started to be stocked by GOG as well.

Princesss,

I can see where my first post brought up your concern. She is the clean line, sophisticated type. Shes certainly not one to overly bling. In fact it seems she wears the simplest pieces Ive bought her the most. I think she would apprciate a high quality stone that shows some depth to a sparkly one that detracts from the other attributes of the stone.

In my searching Im fairly confident it will be around 2Ct. It seems that asschers in this range are about high 6.XX mm to low 7.XX mm wide. I plan on purchasing around the spring time unless the deal of the century pushes it sooner.

Gotcha. I absolutely adore them, personally, but it''s such a big risk that when I didn''t hear much of her in the post, I was concerned.

Sounds like you''ve been doing your research. I think ECs and Asschers are amazing in that they kind of pull you into the stone - you can just stare at them for hours. There are some great prosumers here that really know their stuff. I''m a novice, but I know they''ll steer you in the right direction.

Here is a long thread with lots of pics of asschers and emerald cuts and various settings.
Almost all of them are the rings of PS members.

It is several pages (12 pages on my browser) and may give you some ideas.
