Loose diamonds appear smaller than when set??

Hello - I've been searching for an Emerald cut diamond lately. Lots of loose ones and when I place them on my fingers they look so small! But when I try an equivalent carat size set it looks much more substainal. I've attached s pic of a 2 carat Emerald cut I tried onto day. Lovely stone and we'll cut. When I compare a 1.7 to a 2 carat it didn't appear to be that much bigger.... What are your thoughts?

For size comparison, go by the mm dimensions rather than the carat weight. Some ECs are cut deeper/shallower so a 1.7 ct can measure larger face-up (LxW) than a 2 ct EC.

Hi Lauren, The stone in the pictures looks "spready" to me.
IN other words, it's a bit shallow, so it looks larger than other stones of similar weight.

Personally I love certain stones with that attribute.......

Hi rockdiamond - I too like a little spread if everything looks great. There's s substantial difference between the 2 and 3 carat here. I have a 1.55 princess is a halo so going to a "solitaire" even if it's a bigger size feels less of an upgrade and more of a "shape change". I could halo the emerald..... But if it's big enough id love tapered baguettes on each side.....
