Hello,
Long time lurker here, and I'm hoping that someone can help me....i am looking to upgrade my diamond online, and im afraid to end up with a dud. My new diamond would be a 1.40 ct round, I color, Vs2 quality, 3x cut, (7.21 x 7.25). the depth is 60.2 %, table is 59 %, crown is 33 degrees, and the pavillion is 40.8 degrees. it has med blue flour.
Im also concerned bc I am upgrading from a very good cut 1.08 ct. thats very spready (6.75 x 6.81). and h color. will i notice a huge difference in color? Will i notice a difference in size? Honestly, I am mostly upgrading for cut, but i would like to notice a subtle size difference. Im not really expecting anyone to notice besides me and my husband. Any help would greatly appreciated!!!!! thanks in advance! :)):)):))

Your should be able to see the difference. Most other people don't pay that close attention to the jewelry of others and likely won't notice. I went from 1.5 cts to 2.3 and no one noticed, which I was very happy about!

The angles are generally complimentary and the angles suggest a balance of fire and brilliance and white light. TMost folks here would prefer a table of 53-58%. But, for a 60/60 diamond, it is pretty balanced. But, those numbers really don't tell you enough to determine if the diamond is well cut (the actual faceting of the diamond) which will determine performance. GIAXXX is a broad category that tells you nothing about performance, which is what most want. A sparkly/firey diamond.

Can the vendor provide an IdealScope Image or, better yet, and ASET image. Those images will tell you about performance (with our help if you like).

Most begin to see color at and H or I, so they will be similar. Have you seen a GIA I? That is the best test of color...your eyes and tolerance for it.

You will notice a difference of .5 mm in size!

Hi Diamondseeker!
Ok so you feel the same way I do....i just thought it might sound weird if i didnt want people to notice...but I really really dont! This is for me, and me alone, and i hate to draw attention to myself, lol! Thanks for answering!
Hi Rockysalamander,
I have seen pictures and a video of the diamond, and the color seems whiter than my H, maybe bc of the flour? I know sometimes I even have issues with my H. i have a BGD diamond band, and those diamonds in it are soooo white, it makes my H look dingy. SO....i never wear the band, ha!
I am such a novice, I didnt realize that this is a 60/60! I have heard that they are prone to fisheye, but thats all I really know about them....are there any positive aspects? I ran it thru the HCA, and it did well (score 1.1). I will ask about the Idealscope and ASET, but I dont think they have this diamond in hand, so im not very hopeful....

butting in ;)

My diamond is a 60/60 diamond and I have been really happy with it. It's very sparkly, has a good Idealscope/ASET and does show some fire. 60/60s tend to show more white flashes than colorful ones, but I've been really happy with my ring.

Hi HappyNewLife!
Please, please, the more butts the better, haha! I am really nervous about making this move......mostly because i am trading in my old diamond and once its gone, its gone!:(2
I have a question...my currrent diamond has a 58% table and 58.7% depth....is that a 60/60 too? I am really clueless, I know.... I really like my current diamond in most light, it has mostly white flashes too, some color, but not much, but in bright direct sunlight.....nothing. No color, no white, just a grey blob. I was hoping to get rid of that aspect. Happy, how is yours in direct light??? Thanks!!!!

Oh and just for my info....should the new stone be far superior to the old one? my old diamond stats are 58% table, 58.7% depth, crown is 30.5 degrees, and pavillion is 41.2 degrees. I know there are no guarantees, but i just spoke to the rep;the diamond is not their own. So i have to buy it, theres no holding it. Im totally freaking out, but ive been looking for so long, and im afraid to lose this one like i have others! Also, no aset images, they say they use HCA as a tool (i didnt know diamond vendors did that, i thought it was just for purchasers).
Also, the new diamond is $7300....am i getting a good deal? Sorry, so many questions!! But Im literally...:wall:

Every single diamond every cut will go grey in direct light. That is totally and completely normal. The sunlight causes your pupil to contract. Between that and the diamond flashing like crazy, your contracted pupil perceives the color as grey.

Your current stone would not be a 60/60, its just a 58/58. The stone was spready because of the very low crown angle (ideal stones have been 34-35 degrees only). I suspect it rarely has fire and is dominated by white light. This is not bad or good if you like that diamond. The alternative stone should have more balance of white and rainbow fire and will have a higher crown and be bigger. Diamonds with similar specs as the new one range from $6430 to 7178 from Blue Nile and up to $8000 at James Allen. So, $7300 from a B&M is within that range.

But, if the only reason you want to trade this is to get rid of the grey, it won't make a difference. You have to do what is right for you. I would not personally buy a GIAXXX with these numbers without an ASET or IS.

Rockysalamander,
you are so right! My current diamond doesnt have much colored fire, just reflects white light.....I am thinking that I may want more of a change to justify my purchase, meaning more fire in the stone. And Im glad to hear that a diamond turning grey in sunlight is normal.
I want to thank you ladies for all your feedback. It means a lot to me, esp. since no one I know seems to care about this stuff, and its very important to me. I think I may need to take a step back and breathe, and also re-evaluate trading my diamond in (for some reason, this scares me, i guess bc I cant change my mind). Thanks again, and Ill def need your help again when I find a new stone to freak out over!!! :wavey:

I'm not familiar with 58/58s, sorry. It sounds like you will be getting a better performing diamond. Whether colorful flashes are important to you is what you'd need to decide.

I totally know what you mean. The idea of actually sending this ring off when I upgrade (I'm doing this process too!) is unnerving. I don't want any regrets! I'm not sentimental about jewelry, but the closer I get to sending it away the sadder I get. So maybe I am sentimental!

To answer your Qs- there are definitely more white sparkles than colored ones, but it sparkles like crazy. Mine is full of life, not a blob.

For me, i not sure its sentiment, since this is my second upgrade....I want to be able to compare the new one to my old diamond before i get rid of it. Thats the way I did it last time i upgraded, and it gave me such piece of mind that I made the right choice. Theres nothing quite like a side by side comparison! I may be able to sell it for more in the setting (its in a really nice BGD), but who knows??
I think colored flashes might be important? I cant really say bc ive never had a stone that did that....
Happy, what are you upgrading to??? Do you have any pictures, or are you still looking like me?

I didn't mean to imply that a 58/58 was a type of diamond. My smiley did not get into the message. I was meaning to be a bit cheeky saying it was not a 60/60 and not a typical ideal.

I actually like and will recommend 60/60 diamonds. But, you are both correct that your eyes have to be the test of a 60/60 if ASET and IS are not available. There is no magic formula for a "ideal" 60/60. You just need to look at the numbers and the performance. Each stone either speaks to you or not.

I'm glad to hear you are taking a breather. I do think you need to see the alternative if it will be outside "ideal" parameters. When you are ready, come back and see if we can help.

I can only speak for my tiny diamond since I do not really have any experience with any other stones, but I find my diamond, even though it goes grey in sunlight, still has plenty of firey flashes. It does go very dark under sunlight but I don't mind the appearance as I personally find the flashes of colour very lively. (this if course is just my personal preference)

However given the shallow crown of your current stone, if you're looking for a different appearance under sunlight, maybe you could have a look at some higher crown angles that might give more fire? (mines at 35)

Its pretty hard to take pictures of given given the glare from the flashes, but I've attached a few I could find. IMG_20171017_164224.jpg

Oh i understood your meaning Rocky....I was just wondering if my current was on the fringes of being a 60/60....I know it's not cut very well, but at the time I bought it, it was a step up, and I wanted size, well, basically bc I didn't know any better!
Yeah, I realized this was going to be a slow process, but it stopped being fun about a month ago. Im trying not to get desperate and just buy anything! I need you guys to keep me grounded and out of la-la land.
Hello, Srke!
Yes I think I need to adjust my crown parameters....I am getting drawn by the fact that a lower crown means a "bigger" looking diamond. Mine does not show any color in sun (I think I attached a pic of what mine looks like, I hope it comes thru). In any case I will totally be back, you ladies are the best!!! Thanks again!!!

One more diamond I would like an opinion on before I start all over again.....the GIA report number is #1258951800. I initially wanted nothing to do with it because of all the feathers, and honestly, Im afraid of Si2s. Im not sure why, maybe this is illogical? The vendor was really thinking this was my best choice initially. I haven't seen a picture yet, but vendor says its completely eye clean....what do yo u ladies think??
