I’ve started looking for an engagement setting for my girlfriend and I’m feeling like I’ve hit a wall and I’m hoping some of you can help :). I’m comfortable picking a stone so I’m really just trying to find an amazing setting.

A few notes about her... she’s half Japanese and her Japanese heritage means a lot to her. She prefers gold over silver/platinum. Her taste is more simple/classic but not plain (not into halos).

My original idea was to find a Japanese born jewelry designer. I found a few I liked (and I think she would as well) but after reaching out to them there were issues. One, based on Japan, didn’t sell over the internet. The other required you to purchase the stone directly from them (at 2-3x markup). The other issue I’m finding is that gold settings aren’t as common anymore.

Here’s some I was looking at:
https://www.kataoka-jewelry.com/en/en-jewelry/en-rings/gold-platinum-diamond-ring/
http://www.niwaka.com/bridal/niwaka/engagement/ (I like a bunch of these)

I also found a small ring maker that I reached out to (can't find the website right now). He made very nice delicate designs that integrated some cherry blossom inspired parts. I really would love to find something that has some Japanese influence.

Hoping for some advice, ideas, tips, leads, anything from this great community!

I love this designer’s matte 18k gold hexagon settings but it looks like this jeweler doesn’t do custom work/ set outside stones. Simple hexagon settings aren’t a completely original idea though- you could have something like this made by David Klass and possible incorporate some small cherry blossoms in the basket- where they could be unobtrusive.

Oh wow. I didn't come across Satomi Kawakita in my searches.
I really like the matte gold and a lot of those settings are very very nice.

You might get more attention on this topic in Rocky Talky- more details on potential stone would be helpful as well.

How about something mokume gane metal working?

I was originally going to post there but the description made it seem like it was mainly for discussion about stones and not settings. Is there any way to have this thread moved?

As far as the stone, I'll likely be going for a 1-2 carat round.

Those are very cool and unique pieces! But I think she would prefer something a little more traditional.

To move it, click the box below your post and report it to the mods. They’ll be able to move it for you.

I think you report the post and in the field that pops up you request that the thread be moved to Rocky Talky.
