Hey all,

I''m in the market for an engagement ring and I figure I am going to have to buy the setting and diamond separately. I am a college student and I work part time so I don''t have tons of cash to throw at this. I''m wanting to keep it under $2,000 which probably means I will spend as close to $2,000 as possible. I want to get my girlfriend something unique with a vintage feel. I really like Scott Kay''s vintage selection, but it is way out of my price range... his settings cost more than my total budget. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some less expensive settings like Scott Kay''s. I particularly like the intricacies that he puts into the bands. I''m not exactly an avid reader of Brides.com, but my girlfriend was checking it out and I found some great examples on there. If I had an unlimited budget, I would go down this route ---> http://www.brides.com/engagement/engagement_rings/gallery/vendor/designer/scott_kay/detail/158259?offset=23#_chip=0 Obviously, that ring is out of my budget, but I would love to find something similar. I don''t know if it is realistic to find a setting like this for $800ish and spend around $1200 on the diamond, but asking couldn''t hurt.

So, if anyone can point me in the right direction or slap some sense into me, please do.

Thanks,
Justin

This is also a lovely one. I actually tried it on at a local jeweler. Has lots of ornate detail and a slight euroshank. I tried it with a RB, I wonder if it would work with a princess.

OR this one and spend a little more on the diamond.

Just wanted to throw this one in for fun!

I really like this one: Link - I'm a little worried that the small diamonds on the sides may look junky in person though. I've gotten jewelry before that sparkled in pictures, but ended up looking more "metally" or "junky" in person... if that makes sense. I'd hope that with engagement quality jewelry, that wouldn't be a problem.

I also like this one from James Allen - Link - The thickness of the band looks like it may be a little much though. I'm wondering if this would even be comfortable on my girlfriend's finger. Its not exactly what I had in mind for "vintage", but its close. For some reason I find this ring attractive, but also not. I can't place my finger on it.

This setting is beautiful, but doesn't leave enough room for a nice stone. Link

This setting is alright, but it doesn't have the detailed engravings that I think of with vintage. Link - Plus its a little out of the price range too. Only leaves room for $500 on the diamond.

This one looks awesome, but I'm not sure if I could go without a round stone on it. I know my girlfriend doesn't want a round stone and I'm concerned about the round stones on the band clashing with something like a princess cut. Link

I appreciate everyone's input. I want the ring to be perfect. The center diamond should sit a little bit higher than the other stones on the ring. The side stones, if there are any, should flow into the plane that the center diamond sits on. I love the intricacies of this Bev K setting, but the whole ring doesn't flow into the center stone. Link

You all have increased my setting selection exponentially. Hopefully I will not make my headaches yours. Perfection is necessary though.

For what it's worth, i've seen some Knox pieces in real life, and they look stunning! I also know that they're customer service is fabulous...
Here is a link to another thread where the poster was looking for a specific look. We directed him to Knox, and he ended up getting a custom piece that they named after his fiancee!

Maybe you should consider getting the Scott Kay setting with, ahem, another type of stone than a diamond for now and replacing it with a diamond when you can afford it down the road?

I was just thinking about that on the way home. Its kind of out of the ordinary though... isn't it? Or did you mean the "other" *cough* fake *cough* stuff? How many people are getting engaged with something other than a diamond?

My girlfriend loves tanzanite. Where can I find a good guide for buying tanzanite? Do you follow the same standards as diamonds? Found this really pretty tanzanite engagement ring: Link

Try browsing the Colored Stone forum here on PS... You will see TONS of examples of colored gemstone rings, and you can get some great advice! If you want to go the colored stone route, the experts over these will point you in the right direction.

A colored stone is alwasy a great option! Another great option is getting an already set up actual vintage ring! There are some beautiful rings out there and in your budget too! If you open to other shapes besides a princess that is. I haven''t seen to many set with princess cut stones. But a lot of cushion cut stones and OEC. Which IMO I wish I would have gotten instead of my current ring! I''ll post a few that I think would work well if you decide to go that route!

There is one on there that is in your budget and if you scroll all the way down is a vintage semi-mount in your range as well.

http://www.antiquejewelrymall.com/r199prw33.html I beileve this can be made for a half carat stone if you ask them

I really like this one, and its for a half carat

And I really really really like this on
http://www.antiquejewelrymall.com/r850prw75.html

As far as helping with a centerstone...I know nothing about princess cut diamonds. Maybe the experts can help and chim in. I think A stone like this in the last setting i posted would be perfect!

The last setting you posted is great... I am seriously considering it. My girlfriend loves butterflies and this one has a butterfly design right below the center stone mount. The first present I ever bought her was actually a butterfly necklace.
