I recently found this site/forum and have been looking around online for a 0.80ct RB diamond for an ering. I have been doing a lot of research the last few weeks or so and I found a couple from James Allen and Blue Nile, but am not sure if they would be good.

I'm looking for a 0.80ct, H color, VS2, Excellent cut. Also, I have been reading about the the HCA tool and would prefer it fall under the 2 value that it recommends. I'm not sure if this means that I have to go Hearts & Arrows or whatever equivalent naming from each of the vendors, but I do want a decent cut.

My budget is in the $3000 to $3500 range.

Thanks in advance!

Well, WhiteFlash has a 0.82ct H-SI1 Expert Selection stone - it is a GIA XXX - scores 1.1 on the HCA (Excellent for Light Return, Brilliance, and Fire; and Very Good for Spread) - and per WF, it is eyeclean. Based on the images, it is a gorgeous diamond, though it is slightly over your budget range, with a PriceScope bank wire price of $3574 - but if you are a first-time purchaser with WF, you also get $25.00 of your first purchase over $2,000 - so really it is only $49 over your limit! http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3025054.htm#

eta: great minds... :D

The HCA tool will help you sift out potentially bad/poor performing stones.

Don't discredit a stone if it falls slightly above 2.0. Many here will tell you a great stone may still be had if the value is upward near 2.5/2.6. You just need imaging to help confirm what the HCA predicts.

That whiteflash stone that is suggested above is very nice.

I don't have access to the HCA as my iPhone is using tapatalk.

For the stone above...
Run the numbers in the HCA tool. If the numbers are favorable (i.e. Below 2.0 or so), then it may be a stone that is worth evaluating further.

Right off hand, the numbers seem favorable for you.

The HCA is your friend.

The HCA for the above diamond is 1.4. I guess I'm trying to determine how it compares to the 0.82ct Whiteflash one that was recommended.

It has a higher clarity rating (VS2) and is $300 cheaper - I don't know if the fact that it has a 1.4 HCA would make it comparable to the idealscope picture that whiteflash is showing.

While the numbers/HCA look good, there's no way of evaluating its potential without looking at images of the diamond and other reflector images. Many people highly value the information obtained from such images and would think it's worth spending $300 more and make an informed decision vs. buying blind. That will have to be your personal decision.

True story. I forgot to mention reflector imaging would be the next step, hence the "further evaluation" part.
