Hi, I have been doing a lot of researches on a loose labgrown diamond in the last couples of weeks and at the end of my process after checking few hundred stones... I kind of have my mind set : I want a GCAL 8X round diamond, D color, VVS2+...

Then, I discovered Jann Paul's Octagon Nova and I was hooked... oh damn, how it looks so good, the cut, the fire, the brillance, the flower pattern in the middle is so pretty, I am sure she will love it...

It might be a weird concern...cuz most guys around me would say that from their experience the bigger the better, the shinier the better... BUT is there a point where it's "TOO shiny" ?? I am thinking, she might or might not wear it everyday... but if she wanted to wear it everyday, would it be too much ?

Do anyone here bought a decagon/octagon nova from JP or similar very very shiny stone have feedbacks on daily wear ?
Thanks a lot

would it be too much ?

HAHA I've got a decagon ring on the way and my GF has a maximum size she's after (1.5ct) and the opposite of DSS. I'm worried about the exact same thing! What a problem to have!

Here's a comparison of the decagon vs nova vs crap GIAxxx round -

To me it wouldn't be the shinnyness (brightness?) per se more the eye catching sparkles that "stand out". I'm no expert but I think this results mainly from the alternating contrast patterns, creating the on/off sparkles, which the Nova seems to have less of vs the Decagon. Frustratingly the only owner of a Nova ring on PS has gone dark so there is currently no-one posting with direct experience. The Nova itself is only a few months old and I've not seen anyone post up about persuing another one. There would likely be a many month wait for it to be custom grown and cut if they started today . The ring they chose was also very much an eye catching design and it was clear they didn't share our concerns.

I set some 1ct Moisy "super" stones in a pair of earrings and she gets compliments on them on a semi regular basis. She does like the sentimentality that I kinda sorta "made them" so maybe it would be different if I just bought the equivalent thing. She tells me they are if anything "too much". If you put care and thought into the design of the setting + getting a custom setting video from JP + generally do things to boost the sentimentality/specialness of the ring, the "too much" might be less of a factor as it was with the ear rings.

My "hunch" is the Nova would be less of a "too much" stone vs the Decagon but without anyone posting, with something to compare it to also, it's all just speculation. I have the instinct to just say go for it! It's such a nice pretty stone. If you are super concerned a smaller sized stone should reduce the "impact".

FYI colour should not impact "shininess" or sparkle for that matter and you may be able to save a considerable amount going to an E-F colour. If you do go with JP though, you might not get a choice

Are you sure your misso has DSS? Do you know the approximate size she wants?

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I have a few super ideals, but no JannPaul stones. I think the better question is, what size stone would she be comfortable with, not what strata of light performance would be too “good.” I would choose the carat weight of the stone based on what she is comfortable with, which might take into account where you live, what other people are wearing, or just personal taste. However, I would not try to limit light performance. I think the wearer will spend a lot of time admiring the stone on her hand, and you want it to be really captivating to her eye. A super ideal stone will be endlessly captivating to her.

Wow SparkleMax (nice name to reply this post ahha), I am glad I m not the only one overthinking on this kind of problem !! When I saw your video yesterday and damn I was blown away by both the Decagon and the Octagon, I believe it's the first time i saw the 2 of them next to each other. I know I want one of them for sure ahah.
Yeah it's kind of frustrating to not see any review on the Octagon Core (but in a sense also exciting as it's unique).

Aw, very nice for the earring, i'm also planning to make it feels special with small touch that would "boost the sentimentality/specialness of the ring" to paraphrase your :).

That's great to read you, I really appreciate the time you took to reply ahha !! you have been of a great help and I am going for it :)

As for the carat weight, she probably has a comfortable weight that I already took into account, but the light performance might be an odd issue that crossed my mind after reviewing so many stones ahah. Thanks for your feedback, the stone will probably endlessly captivate her, and you are right, it would be a waste to limit the light performance when it's so good :)

I’ve never had the pleasure of viewing a JannPaul super ideal cut, but I share your concerns.

I did have the opportunity to view another branded super ideal cut that was almost impossibly brilliant in every environment and at every angle….but I found it frustrating because it didn’t really show much movement. It was always the same no matter what direction it turned, and thus showed no real “play of light.”

In the end, I found it bright but boring.

On ASET, there was almost no blue contrast.

I don’t know about the octagon nova per se, but I would be interested to see how it plays the light as it moves through space.

Sparkle is nice, but it is especially pleasing when one can see a coordinated play-of-light.

If a diamond is too shiny, all someone has to do is touch it. Diamonds love grease and oil, and it's quite easy to dull a diamond.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with brilliance. For me, when that brilliance translates into a lack of scintillation and movement in the stone, it loses its charm.
