I am looking for an Asscher cut for my wife. I will be coming home from Iraq and want it to be a surprise. Looking for 1.5 carat I have done lots of looking found the one at BN I spoke of in another post. I can not get enough info from BN to feel comfortable. Some of the basics I am looking for. VVS and G or H. I want it to have nice table but do not want to worry about it being chipped. I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Thanks, STLCPL

I gathered your budget is still around 7k?

Can''t seem to find any near your budget for your specs, dropping the carat down to around 1.3c there are a few from GOG. Would you consider that?

I am willing to do 9k. I have been looking so long I am confused now. Grrrrr. I just want it to be perfect. LOL I found some at JA that I like. When I look at them under the Digital 16x loop it looks like there are bubbles in them. It is a 1.58 carat E VVS1. Not sure if it is just the viewer or what. I thought VVS1 you would not be able to see much.

I will try to link it. I will also look at the ones you got listed. I am really wanting to stay at least 1.5 carat. Also wanting a nice size table without it being so big that I have to worry about chipping.

Thank you guys for being patient and helping a fella out.

This is the setting I am working with. I think anything less than 1.5 carat will look dwarfed in this setting.

That should be impossible, inclusions should not be visible at VVS1 level at 16X mag.

This is the only one at 9k range. I think it is best you call up GOG and place it on hold and ask Jon, the owner of GOG for an opinion, or to work with you on your budget.

Yep that would be the one. TY

On the diamond I linked to fit this setting I feel the table is a little small.

I will try to see that Storm is aware of this thread, he is our asscher specialist and will be able to give you excellent and useful advice with proportions and images etc, he has helped many find asschers in the past over the years so he knows his stuff.

Also any diamond can chip unfortunately.

May I ask why you''d like a large(r) table?

Hi, hoping to help you out here. My fiance purchased my asscher from James Allen. I''m not sure of the details but I know he returned one first (not sure from where) and then kept the second one he tried from JA. The first he ordered was slightly smaller, F color and VVS. He thought it would be perfect. When it arrived, it had that glassy table look of a square emerald cut, but it just kind of was flat, had no sparkle. He knew I loved those broad flashes that come out of an asscher. He called JA and spoke to them and they helped him select one with more obvious windmills (what I wanted) and a greater depth which I think is what makes it sparkle more. The table is average. He ended up going down in color to H and went with VS2. It''s a larger stone and the two of us could not be happier! It sparkles like crazy, and I am very picky and I can see NO inclusions in the stone what-so-ever! I see the warmth of the H occasionally, when we are under very yellow lighting, but overall I''m glad I got the slightly larger size. Afterall, you are most prone to diamond shrinkage syndrome when you own an asscher.

Hope this helps!

hi,
First Thank you for your service!

The biggest thing with Asschers is to get pictures and videos can help also.
They can not be purchased without them.

A smaller table and higher crown with nice looking patterns makes for a great looking asscher.
Once the table gets to big they start looking glassy rather than fiery.
My cut off point is around 64-65% table.
Around 60% is very common in well cut asschers and even smaller.

Check out some of the asscher videos by gog here:
http://www.vimeo.com/diamondinfo/videos
That will give you an idea of what a well cut asscher can do and how they can vary.

As far as chipping goes the girdle is the weakest point on any diamond so a med girdle is the min on an asscher due to some cleavage factors.
Most of the time asschers are cut bank vault tough so it is rarely an issue.

Just for convenience I''ve seperated all the videos into seperate groups/albums. Here is the album specific to Asscher Cuts. Hope this helps.

I appreciate your information. I will look at the videos. I am not wanting a huge table the one I linked has 55%. I was thinking a little bigger would be better. I agree I do not want the glassy emerald look either. Soooo many choices. I appreciate your time.

Rhino I was hoping you could help me narrow down a diamond. I want it to fill the setting I have on this post. I want it to be fiery not glassy. I am leaning towards the VVS as I do not want her to see any inclusions. G or H. 9k or less is this achievable? Somewhere I read that you might have more diamonds available that what one could find on the site.
Thanks, STLCPL

I have been pondering, yes some of us still ponder. Anyway I was pondering how I would present her with the ring. I was reading a post of VGIRL and saw her new cushion cut diamond in it setting placed in a rose. Now my wife loves calla lilies. The only problem I see with the calla is the white. I want it to stand out and sparkle. So I think I will go with the red rose. Now then when and where to give it to her? hmmmmm anyway...

If your wife loves lillies, I would use those as your props as it will be even more special to her. Make sure some light is hitting the flower where the ring sits if possible to make it sparkle, she will notice it alright!

I was planning on giving it to her on a sunny day outside where the sun could work its magic on the Asscher.

Home Depot and Costco have the best lighting for sparkle.
Also they are such romantic places!

Oh and if you don't want to see any inclusions (with the naked eye) you can get a VS1.
There may be a very tiny chance you'd see an inclusion in a VS2 asscher in certain light if you have eagle eyes if it was right under the table.

Grab a loupe and even a VVS1 will have an inclusion that a trained eye can spot - otherwise it would have gotten an IF grade.

Don't propose outside in the sun.
Full sun will produce blindingly-intense flashes of light that overpower the distinctive personality of the asscher cut.

IMHO outside on a sunny day under a tree that lets in dappled sunlight has the best balance of light for viewing/photographing diamonds.
The main source of light is diffuse shade so you will see that hall of mirrors the asscher cut is famous for, but the many small bright spots of sunlight coming through will illuminate many of the asscher's chunky facets with deeply saturated colors.
It is like you fully enjoy that hall of mirrors but the mirrors are of colors that change and are of just the right intensity.

Seeing a diamond in full sun can be like beautiful music that is just too loud.

Hi STLCPL,

Glad to oblige but you would have to contact me vis the site. And yes ... I have access to just about every virtual diamond you see on the web and many more you do not see as well.

We''ll keep our eyes peeled for your email.

Kind regards,
Jonathan
