Hi guys, I'm looking for some help before purchasing a diamond for an engagement ring and thought I would ask the forums here. I began where I suspect many prospective buyers begin with researching the "4 c's." I eventually found my way to Blue Nile, these forums and a number of other sites. As I kept digging deeper, I started learning about more specific/advanced things like light performance, crown/pavilion angles, HCA ratings and all that fun stuff.

With the help of these forums I have gained an appreciation for the Brian Gavin signature diamonds and I think I'm leaning in that direction, although I haven't ruled out the WF ACAs or the James Allen True Hearts. My girlfriend's preference is for a round stone and I've concentrated my search in the G-I color range, as that seems to be where I find a balance between my budget and still getting the kind of cut/carat/clarity that I'm hoping for. The one thing I know for sure is that there is infinitely more knowledge, experience and insight on these boards than my self-education could ever provide, so I figured I would post and see what feedback you guys have on which to pick (or perhaps reasons you may see to stay away from any of these):

1) Brian Gavin Signature 1.888 carat H SI1 ($20,976):

I definitely put a premium on the quality of a BG Signature diamond, but would love to hear whatever thoughts you have to offer. You'll probably notice that I'm wrestling with the cost/value versus "it's a 2.+ carat stone" issue, so I will just say that it would be nice to have but that's not a huge factor for me, especially when those stones push the price up 2-3k, which stretches my budget towards its upper limit. I'm leaning towards #1 at present moment for whatever that's worth.

Thoughts/feedback welcome and thank you in advance!

Nice choices! My favorite is the BGD 1.88ct H stone and then the WF stone as a 2nd choice. The JA I looks very yellow to me and I trust the BGD and WF stones to be more of a true H&A precision cut.

You could choose based on what setting you're looking for. Personally I love BGD's settings the most, but that's just me :)) . Buying the diamond and having it set with the same vendor is usually the easiest route since the stone will be insured while it's being set.

BGD and WF both have nice up-grade/trade-up policies. If you go with the 1.88 carat now, maybe in the future you'll upgrade your lovely wife to a 2+ carat when the funds are more in line.

Good luck, come back and let us know what you choose! :naughty:

Thanks for the feedback! It's encouraging to hear that I'm on the right track ha :P
