This is my first post.

I''m looking for a platinum 2mm cathedral mounting with a custom head/basket. I found a mounting that I love in a local mall store, but it''s $1,700. Does that seem normal? TIA

could you describe it? 1700 seems outrageous... but I have no idea what you mean by custom head.

It is seriously a plain 2mm cathedral setting with no diamonds, design or head. She told me they would only charge me $200 for a 4 prong head. My issue with the cost is that my Fi only spent about $250 on my 2mm Tiffany-style mounting. $1900 seems a bit more than outrageous for something that isn''t very different from what I have now.

I don''t like the prongs on the head and I went to another store and they have what the guy called a basket with two rows of diamonds to set my stone in.

I have run into something similar and I have come to accept that I will be paying $1300-1600 if I make a change, and i am looking at 18k yellow gold, not even platinum.

A simple, elegant classic solitaire (without sidestones) that complements my 3mm wedding band is not as easy as I though it would be.

Why? well, my eagle eyes won''t settle for less than exquisite craftsmanship and inspired design.
And I''m just trying to set a round stone!

With a fancy shape, I''d be even more inclined to bite the bullet and pay for quality.
It just seems there is a big jump when you move away from the stock pieces.

Although, if you have a standard sized stone, i think it''s easier to get one "off the rack" that is good quality.

One thing I have learned from reading these threads and my own experience is that it is ultimately more cost effective to get the right thing and pay what it costs than to try & go cheap.

It''s not that large of a stone and I don''t mind paying for quality. It''s more that $1695 for a simple setting from a mall store seemed a bit much. I ran over to a family owned jewelry store at lunch today and the old man looked at my ring, asked me what I wanted and told me it would be just $495 and he could have it ready the same day if i brought it in when they first open.

Helzberg wanted almost 3 times as much and would have to take my ring for a week to have it reset. No thanks.
