I was researching an upgrade for my EG when my mother recently decided this ring shouldn't live in a safety deposit box any more and I should just have it. I believe it is about 1.2 carats but I am still waiting to see the paperwork. My mother worked at a jewelry store in NJ in the late 60s and was able to purchase this ring at cost ($500) as a employee benefit. She was 19 years old and single. She said Harry Winston came into the shop with a folder full of diamonds and laid them out on the counter and this is the one she picked. Now I don't know if that is true or not, but we will see when she digs up the paperwork! Is it even possible that that is a true story?

Originally I was leaning towards a closer to 2 carat old mine or modern cushion cut. Or OEC. I have been hunting for a year for a cool vintage or classic piece at a good value. I have seen a lot of beautiful rings but I haven't felt like committing to any of them. When I was given this ring I wasn't sure if it was "the one" or not but now I think that given the right setting it would satisfy my desire for an upgrade and also be a lovely sentimental piece to wear every day.

I'd like it to be classic and tasteful but also have more bling than my old ring. My old ring is a .65 carat oval with tapered baguettes in platinum, classic, simple.

Can you help me find a setting for my oval? I admit I want it to look bigger. :)

I like 3 stone rings, I love step cut sides. I like bezel set and prong set centers. I like calibre and I like migraine. Am I all over the place or what?! I need a low profile but I really want it to sparkle and catch light. In the end this ring will be an heirloom and I will give it to my daughter so I want it to be a beautiful, unique AND classic. Is that too tall an order? It doesn't need to be a totally custom ring as I would prefer to just find a setting that fits what I like and not go through all the work of a custom ring.

I will try to upload pics of my ring and also link to some styles I kind of like.

thanks for your time! I have been silently trolling for a year and learned a lot!

That's a cool story of your mom's

If this is going to be a future family heirloom i think its perfectly ok to embellish the story a bit, so regardless how true your mom's story is, id go with it

Yeah, that's what I think too!

holy moly, that's a great story! i admire your mom for having the moxie to buy herself a ring at 19!

what are the measurements (length/width)? that will help tell you if it'll be easy to find a ready-made setting.

if you're ok with your daughter resetting it again in the future if she desires, maybe it would help narrow down to think about what will make you happiest to wear right now.

for example the calibre/target setting for example is classic art deco and won't ever go out of style, but it may be less popular in the future or not be to her taste decades from now.

ivy & rose has a lot of vintage and art deco inspired settings with very reasonable pricing, lots of target styles and halos. you can check also out a ton of ready-made settings at the Stuller website to get ideas, most jewelers have access to them and sometimes custom settings aren't that much more expensive than stock, doesn't hurt to get quotes. =) good luck!

Good points about thinking about what would make me happiest right now. She would be free to reset if she wanted to. I’ll check out those sites. Thanks !

beautiful story to the ring.
out of the ones that you have shown:
I really like the classic 3 stone with bullets side. it will give it presence/ size that you want.
THe ladys slipper- is a lovely vintage ring but it may not give you the size/ presence that you wish.

the other target style rings "work" for cushions. so, i can't seem to see it working for an oval.

Me too leaning towards the classic 3-stone with bullets side or I will just halo it to have more finger coverage.
Nice ring even in its original setting & the story behind it =)2=)2=)2

So the oval pictured is your original ring that you want to reset, or your mom's?
Either way it looks like a beautiful stone & I can't wait to see what you end up with!

The oval is my moms ring that I want to reset.

I think the current setting is cool. For a solitaire it is unique. Have you considered just wearing it as is? Maybe purchase a band with some sparkle to enhance it?

IIRC, David from DBL worked at Harry Winston at some point (not saying that far back!) but he might be able to tell you the veracity of the original story.

@lydial - I feel I really need something with a lower profile. I have four young kiddos and a couple times they have said I scratched them. But maybe I should think about a simple setting and then adding bling with a diamond wedding band. Definitely a thought!

Perhaps you should use the current setting and have milgrain added down the shank on either side. Might scratch that itch.

This is a lovely setting for an oval IMO...no milgrain though

BTW, does EG = ER = Engagment Ring?

Oops ! Yes I meant type ER. Can’t figure out how to edit the post...

i wonder how this would look with my oval:

That would be lovely...expensive, but lovely! If you want to go with Leon Mege make sure you google around and search
Pricescope first so you know what you're getting into. Some people have great success with him, others not so much.

I really like this setting or a 3-stone setting. The 3-stone setting with bullets looks nice, or you could also looking at pear sides as well!

Yes, I have read some of the stories about LM. Is it possible to have a good jeweler make a similar ring? I don't care about brand names of anything really!

any idea how much he would charge for a setting like this for my oval? Just ballpark?

It would be in the 5k and up ballpark. You could certainly have another jeweler make something like that for you and shave a couple thousand from a branded LM.
I like the original setting, you could just tweak it a little. Or, a riff on that with added sidestones/detailing would be divine too.

What a cool story! Such a pretty diamond, I like the last setting by victor with French cut diamonds. Wow!
