These are the specs I'm looking for:
VS2+
F+
very good cut+
.90 carat
round

This is the ring we like http://www.ritani.com/hs/bella-vita-engagement-ring/1R3723 in 18K gold. I have been shopping around and found that I can get diamonds that are EGL certified at these specs for muchhhhh cheaper than GIA http://www.brilliance.com/diamonds/...eal-cut-egl-certified-loose-diamond-D12556335 ($1k cheaper). I have read conflicting reports on GIA vs EGL and I really am not sure what to believe. Does anyone have advice on any of these things (GIAvEGL, the specifications I've decided on, the setting, anything)

Brilliance.com used pictures belonging to Whiteflash to describe one of their diamonds. Avoid.

EGL tends to be be looser in grading than GIA. Expect one color grade off at least for EGL USA. EGL International is usually at least two grades off, and their grading is all over the place. Avoid.

If you want to save money, go down in color instead of switching to an EGL report. The one you picked is deep with a 63 depth, combined with a 59% table is usually not a good proportion combination.

Egl is misleading. So the specs on paper are the same, but that same stone might be graded an I si1. Is that now a better deal?

Do not compromise on cut. Cut is king cut is what will make that diamond d sparkle. Honestly if you are on a budget you need to bring your specs down to an I si1. These are minute changes you won't notice in a well cut stone but will notice in price

What's your budget?

For cut, you want "Excellent" if graded by GIA and "Ideal" if graded by AGS. I'm sure you've read enough to know that cut is most important in determining the sparkle factor.

I'd stick to the PS recommended vendors for my initial search. Brilliance.com isn't one of them. Check out the following: James Allen, Brian Gavin, Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, Engagement Rings Direct, ID Jewelry, B2C Jewels. I've read that IDJ is good at helping customers find good diamonds that fit into small budgets.

just remember that people send their diamonds to get the certificate that will earn them the most money.if the stone would have came back that grade by the GIA, someone would have sent it there to be graded and get that extra 1000 dollars

So I used the Pricescope search to look around. https://www.pricescope.com/diamond-search-results/

3000 doesn't even get you a .75 F VS2, so you know the grading on the .92 EGL is loose, to put it lightly. That would be the right price for something more like an I SI1. You should expect to spend 5K or more for a well-cut .9 F VS2. You could get a poorly cut one for less, but that results in lost face-up appearance and/or diminished liveliness and brightness.

I'm willing to pay ~$7,000 total W/the band that will cost $2860 but I obviously want the best deal. I also want a cheaper band since that seems damn expensive to me but it's the only one in that style we found. thanks for the help

You have been given excellent advice. I would spend my budget on an excellent cut stone even in the I Si2 (eye clean) if you want .75-.90. GIA GIA GIA...I just lived through buying studs 1.20 each from EGL international and I don't sleep at night . They were rated F-G Si1 and they are not......

so you will never have to second guess a GIA.......

Keep looking we will help you find the perfect stone.

Love that setting JulieN

I appreciate the quick advice. I'm convinced, I'll stick with GIA. Let me pose the question like this then:

If you guys had $4000 to spend on a .9 carat round diamond, what specs would you want it to have (color, cut, clarity) How about if the budget was $5000?

Regardless of that extra 1000, Cut is always the most important, you do not want to waver on that, The easiest way to get a well cut one is to go for AGS000 (also a very good cert, you dont have to leave those out) or GIA triple EX that fall within 2 on the HCA

Color is subjective, but in general, and ESPECIALLY if you arent putting it in a halo, i would be very comfortable going down to an I.

Clarity really all that matters is eye clean. If you can achieve that as a SI1 then all the better. The point of clarity is to make sure you can see any inclusions right? so if you cant, then what does it matter? And a reputable seller like JA will tell you if a stone is eye clean or not.

Remember you dont wear the cert on your finger, you wear the stone. Its all a game of compromises. Minute compromises down to an I or a SI1, those you wont be noticable, Cut and size? those will be more so.
